Arrgg...always very fit person. Hoped I'd avoid this but got a hernia right out of the gate.

Curious about outcomes and how active you can be after.

Thanks!

Im herniated as well and have been since the last 5 weeks as well! im

told by my ostomy nurse that it’s a common thing. Mine is pronounced as well and there’s nothing that can be done about it.

I had my colostomy on March 31, 2021 and I think the hernia showed up sometime in August.  My doctor told me it was common and he probably wouldn't operate on it unless it started interfering with my bag staying on.  I went back in January of this year because, even though I was using Coloplast Flip barriers, I had problems getting a good seal and was having "blow-outs" (y'all know what I mean!).  I had my repair on March 13th and I'm doing great so far.  I have noticed that my stoma is quite a bit smaller since the repair and it's WAY concave now.

@alida Well I am just about fit to be tied! I went in for my hernia repair this morning, and it was cancelled at the last minute. I was prepped, IV’d, and ready to be wheeled into the OR when my surgeon came in and told me it was cancelled. Due to a shortage of nursing staff, she said. 🤬 I know this isn’t a political forum, but this is what happens when we elect politicians who don’t want to spend money on healthcare. We had problems in healthcare before, but the pandemic has exacerbated them. The billion dollars that were cut from the license plate sticker renewal (Ontario) could have gone into healthcare and made a difference. Instead, it’s being used to bribe voters. Sorry for the rant, but I am so angry at governments that don’t look at the long term picture and take care of their citizens.

@tigerlily  ... Ooooh my... thats so terrible I almost cried reading it.  I have had an emergency surgery delayed once while still in agonizing pain for an emergency in my place & that was an understandable situation.  I CAN'T  imagine the disappointment you felt being told this.  I'm sure Liza can truly sympathized with your upset here!   I'm so sorry!!!   B.C. has canceled the license plate sticker program also & as far as the gas rebate goes I'd much rather it goes into the medical professionals we need & as quickly as in a half heartbeat!

I fear Gov't has backed themselves into a tight corner & I'm  not looking forward to the fallout and we all know it will eventually come one way or another.

I hope your next apt. is sooner rather then later.  My heart goes out to you Laurie.  Thats just  Not Right in so many ways!

@tigerlily I am so sorry; of course you feel fit to be tied. How could they have let things go that far before they figured out that they didn’t have enough nursing staff?

Colostomy 4/30/18.

OK, I have calmed down since my last post. I was looking for a way to edit it but can’t figure out how. Sorry if my post was offensive. After going through the bowel purge, getting very little sleep, psyching myself up for surgery, driving to the hospital, looking for a parking spot, getting gowned, IV’d and conversations with the anesthesiologist, residents, etc, etc, etc……to be told at the very last minute that it was cancelled feels like a kick in the teeth.  I don’t know at this point when I will be rescheduled, and there are no guarantees that I won’t be cancelled again. This is frustrating. It’s bad enough for me, but at least I’m not in pain. I can’t imagine how devastating this would be for someone who is.

@tigerlily I can't even imagine!  I'm so sorry you went through all that; freaking RIDICULOUS!  It sounds like you're in Canada?

@tigerlily Just checking in to ask if you ever had your procedure done. I just got out of the hospital after having an obstruction in my parastomal hernia. Was able to medically resolve it, but wasn't a pleasant experience. Will met with a hernia specialist next month. He did mesh for my incisional hernia and that has worked well. Unfortunately I developed the hernia around my Urostomy after th previous surgery

@grw yes I did have the hernia repair in early June. It went very well; my surgeon used biological mesh for the repair, which I had asked for. She had warned me that there would be more pain in recovery because of the way she had to tack it to the muscle. Apparently biological mesh is thicker than synthetic mesh, so the traditional tacks aren’t possible. She had to suture the mesh in 8 different spots, which meant 8 separate little incisions - my belly looked like a sieve for awhile, but it’s all healed now. I am cautiously doing abs exercises now.

I’m sorry to hear about your obstruction - every ostomate’s worry. Glad to hear that the hernia repair went well. Hoping your recovery goes smoothly. Take good care of yourself, listen to your body (including when it says “Nap time!” - your body needs rest to heal) and no lifting anything more than 10 lbs for awhile.

Glad everything went well for you. Thanks for the kind words. Not lifting is a hard one, but will do like the Doc orders.
