I am seeking support concerning leakage around my my iliostomy. I have begun using paste.    My stoma area has hills and gullies.  I have gained a lot of weight.

I use a convex system because my stoma does not protrude without it.  The appliance sits on an eakin ring stretched to the elliptical shape of my stoma.  This has worked well until recently.  Basically, I’ve got a tube of paste, and I’m not sure how to use it.

You sqeeze  out the paste around the hole of the ostomy appliance. Not too much . Then let it sit for a minute and then put on your bag. I attached a link to a video because visual  is more explanatory. Just click link below to watch.

My stoma is not round and does not protrude.

Can you address that?

@gardengypsy no only a doctor or stoma nurse would be able to address that.

As Chelly said, you'd need to be examined by a stoma nurse to have your appliance, all the supplies you use, and the area around your stoma assessed before making a plan to address the leaks.

You mention having a non-protruding stoma, and it's good that you are using a convex appliance for that (it helps).

The Eakin ring may not even be necessary if your weight has changed enough, and that could be the reason why your setup is no longer working.

Paste can be helpful if you've got a lot of dips or creases, but I tend to be someone who much prefers to use the minimum number of supplies possible. Every new thing you add just creates another failure point.

Please, try to get in touch with a stoma nurse who can see up close what's been going on.

We have local medical supply shops who often have a stoma nurse come in every once in a while (by appointment), so if you aren't able to get one through your local hospital or clinic, that might be an option.

I have also seen tele-nurses who can assess through a video call, but I do still think that having a nurse see you in person would be best.

Good luck!
