After proctectomy and sew up, I have had a rash around the area that has not gone away.  Been washing frequently and applying aquapher.  Any similar problems with anyone?

Hi Rick,

I have not had that reaction, but (no pun intended) I do have a suggestion. Have you ever thought of using Desitin? It is formulated for taking care of diaper rash and may be very effective in your case.

Yes, I think a diaper rash cream might be an option. However, rashes have a nasty way of spreading and/or getting worse, so if you can schedule a consultation with your stoma nurse I think you'll be given other treatment options to try.

Just your friendly neighborhood ostomate.

A little more pain in sew up area and a little more bleeding after 2months suddenly appear, this may be cause. Anyone else have this happen?  There are a lot of cars, chairs, etc to contend with daily.  Does a small tear ever happen to anyone, and does it heal itself?

@rick find a cushion that works for you. Sitting directly on the wound puts pressure on the scar tissue and that doesn’t help with healing. I tried a “roho”cushion in the hospital, but that wasn’t good for me - and I still can’t sit on it 6 years later. I found a cushion called “TushCush” that was really comfortable because it has a cutout where my wound was. That eliminates direct pressure on the wound. You can find it on Amazon, and maybe also where you get your ostomy supplies.

As for healing, my wound took a very long time, but that was because of radiation injury. If that isn’t your issue, then you should consult a wound nurse who may want to try a wound vac or other techniques. It’s frustrating, I know. The trouble is, the wound isn’t in a great place that is easy to heal. It will, in its own sweet time.

Rick...Ooohhhh,  so sorry butt, a good peak from a nurse or doctor is in order.  You need to rule out other things.

In the mean time as suggested & though I have not had the butt surgery,  I do  rely on a diaper rash cream for the times I had a small liquidy butt leak & can't get to a throne immediatly. Plus before Stoma & those lovely burning rings of butt acid fires, I relied heavily on the tins of Penetin diaper rash cream. Its good for eczema too,  another reason I have it on hand. Its immediate relief.

In Canada its Penetin or Zincofax, I've not heard of the other above.  I even went as far as tucking a few squares of tissue between the cheeks to keep it dry as possible to avoid the excess heat until I bought the cream. Penetin needs to be washed of but reapplying multiple  times before hand is no issue.

***Please have someone medically take a closer look for you as well as the cream to avoid an infection. Its never nice to have to drop the drawers but safety first!! Best wishes & I hope this is solved for you!!!

I had some mild irritation and used Polysporin. It seemed to help a lot. It was a weird bit of a time. The area was very sensitive. Went from gross damp to too dry. The Polysporin soothed quickly and seemed add just enough moisturizing. Keep it clean. Apply once or twice a day. Everything is great now. Five months in. Don't notice a thing now.

Why?
