@veganostomy Thanks.  Yeah my regular filters do get clogged at day 3 or 4 when wearing them horizontally.  I usually just wipe them out and tape them up.  I'm definitly leaning towards filterless for my next order.

Request samples of filterless bags if you're on the fence. These companies would be happy to send them 👍

So I'm trying to get cleared to go back to full duty at work.  I'm still trying to figure out if it'd better to go vertical or horizontal as far as a having a more discrete profile.  I do get a lot of air and I've noticed that my horizontal can look and feel like it had more output in it then it actually does.  I'm currently wearing a vertical but I do have to tuck in my shirt.  It is a baggy shirt but my concern is if the bag fills up a lot before I can empty it.  For example if we're out training.  Any ideas or thoughts?  I currently have one of each.  I've ordered one more of each due to weightloss and I've also ordered a vertical hybrid.  But the hybrid is still a few weeks out.

@bigmike322 My thoughts re: horizontal vs vertical:

Vertical pros:

  • A more natural orientation for the ostomy bag.
  • Gives you the full capacity of the bag without any real issues.
  • Easier to empty the bag.
  • Easier to get on and take off.
  • Can be taken off without having to worry about how your bag sits.
  • Is able to support a full bag without having the wafer tug at your skin.

Vertical cons:

  • Not as easy to use if you've got a shirt tucked in.
  • Not as discrete.

Horizontal pros:

  • More discrete.
  • Allows for easier bending at the hip and upper thigh.
  • Does a great job supporting the weight of a heavy bag.
  • Feels better/more natural, even though the ostomy bag is in a more unnatural orientation.
  • Works well with a greater variety of clothing.
  • Less likely to get caught on something (if that's a risk for you).

Horizontal cons:

  • Not as easy to put on/take off, but this depends on how often you do it throughout the day.
  • Makes it more difficult to have your bag out when not wearing the belt; unless you can use this trick.
  • Not as good to use if you've got a filter on your bag.
  • Not as comfortable to wear when the bag is really full/ballooned (at least, not for me).

That's my personal pros and cons list. Since you have the ability to wear both, I'd continue to test them in different scenarios, until a “winner” comes up.

So I'm back to work full duty. I have received and have been usingnew the horizontal and vertical belts.  (I went down a size due to weight loss). I've had 2 leaks recently, one happened at work.  Both times I was able to minimize the mess and change bags while no one was any they user.  One happened in a hotel room at 5am that  was sharing with other people.  So I'm proud of the fact that no one was any the wiser.

I'm a little nervous because I'm doing a 72 hour shift but we'll see how it goes.  I put on a fresh appliance at 1200AM Thursday.  Work started at 0730 and I get off at 0730 Sunday.  We'll see.

@veganostomy It went great.  The shift was easy and I changed it my appliance  2 days later at around the 100 hour mark.  I think I like eakin and coloplast rings best.  Just need to get through my stack of adapt rings first.

Thank you for asking.

I'm doing another 72 hour shift.  Got 24 hours of mandatory overtime this morning.   I'll hit the 72 hour mark on this appliance in a bit here.  So far so good.  16.5 hours left in the shift.

Good luck, BigMike!

I usually get around 72 hours on a pouch/plate/ring, sometimes more, sometimes less.

Colostomy 4/30/18.
I love the smell of coffee in the morning. It smells like .... victory.

It's important to keep in mind that in many parts of the world, 2-3 days of wear is pretty much what you aim for.

In North America, we try to go as long as possible, often because we're either paying for these products out of pocket, or because insurance limits us.

As long as your skin's health is good, go with however long works best. For many years, my wear time was pretty much 3-4 days before my skin got angry!

  1. @veganostomy yeah I got a little over 76 hours and did a change at work.  No leaks because I use the brava pouch extenders.

3-4 seems to be right for me.  Weird thing is the skin gets red bellow the stoma where I there is no stool. It was good for a bit and now its red again.  The stool usually goes to the right and that skin is okay.

Hi Mike, I would get that redness in the same place from time to time. I have always put it down to sweat rather than a leak. I would do a bit of crusting before putting on the ring and it helps heal it right up 🤗

I just had a leak after approximately 56.5 hours.  I burped the bag right before that and laid back down.  Had I emptied the bag and unfastened the stealth belt I would have noticed the swelling.  Oh well at least it happened a couple of hours before my shift started.

Funny thing is it leaked from the top left.  I was concerned about the bottom initially because the previous change was a quick one at work and I didn't like the placement of the pouch extenders on the bottom.

I blame the quick change I did previously combined with the adapt ring.  Also this time around I was wearing it vertically.  I got more wear time the previous 2 times wearing it horizontally with a brava ring.

Just need to use up all these adapts first.
