Possible blockage

Ate an iceberg lettuce salad yesterday. Not a large amount but apparently I did not chew well enough. Output was slow all night, not as much night time gas. Output has been very thick, looks like cooked spinach consistency, shreds of lettuce apparent when I rinse the bag.

I've taken a bath, removed the appliance to give Oscar breathing room, currently laying on heating pad w a warm washcloth on to catch any output. I can hear the occasional gas passing. I'm drinking some Gatorade. In a few hours if Oscar does not cut loose I'll be calling the Dr for advice/ assistance.

Ouch. I hope that passes soon.

When I watch salad, even the tough stuff, I almost never see it in the bag. Being able to identify your food means you definitely need to chew more thoroughly next time!

I find that massaging the area around my stoma with my appliance off is the best way to relieve a partial blockage (for me).

Good luck!

Called the surgeon. Oscar let out a few tablespoons of lettuce, a small amount of fluid and nothing for the last 2 hours. Just a puff of gas. Such an odd feeling, I've usually dumped the bag 2 times already. They will be calling me back, he's headed out of town but might still be around.

Felicity,

Also pay attention if you begin to feel nauseated! And if you start to vomit, get to the ER. I am pretty sure  our Bagmaster covers this somewhere! Anyway, my best wishes to you, hang in there.

Yes, nausea is a huge red flag that something needs to be done soon.

Good luck with your appointment, Felicity.

Hi Felicity

Sounds like your already getting it taken care of  . Don't know if it would help or not but when mine doesn't seem to be as active as I think it should be  . I drink 6 or 8 Oz 0f grape juice seems to help me .

Good luck

Went in, met a lovely Ostomy Nurse, the Nurse from my surgeons office and a Nurse Practitioner. The other nurses were along to learn since it's a teaching hospital.

Oscar got a soap suds enema basically. He did not want to let go of the lettuce. If he does not act right I'm to call and come back tomorrow. No pain or discomfort, no nausea.

So weird having someone with a finger knuckle deep in your stoma...

Thank you for the blog. It's enabled me to make good choices and be educated in my Ostomy life.

Hi Felicity, well that's a day to forget but also remember. Now you have to do 100 lines, "I will remember to chew my food"  We all make mistakes, ye take care.

All of that for manky iceberg lettuce, not even the good stuff. Next time I'll aim for the good stuff. Spinach salad w bacon vinaigrette, eggs and onion.

Might be in for round 2 today. Oscar looks good, pink and not hunkered in misery. Just output wise I only had to empty once last night before bed and once after in the night, did not need to empty this am small piddly amount. Messaged my boss, going for a walk, calling my surgeons office to report in 45 minutes. Not sure when I'll be seeing the Ostomy Nurse.

Edit to add

20 minutes on, I've walked our longish suburban block at a brisk clip. Oscar busted out a small bit of lettuce. That stuff does not want to leave me. Did a hot bath, massaged my belly and around the flange and around the stomach through the bag.

All in all it's not been horrible. Just not worth it for an iceberg lettuce salad. Olive Garden salads are ok but oh do I dream of a Montgomery Inn Spinach Salad with Bacon Vinaigrette with hard boiled eggs and onions.

Had a chicken thigh and some peanut butter crackers because I was getting a headache from being without food. Been drinking fluids like I should . He's just not producing like he should even just liquid output.

Usually, laxatives aren't recommended if you've got a blockage.

Warm water sometimes helps, but it sounds like Felicity has a bolus, which may need to be broken up with a catheter (if things don't break apart on their own).

The finger in the stoma... Yeah, that's a strange feeling for sure!
