I have always drank a lot of coffee but much less now.

So true about coffee can't be a sub for water as it comes out the colon where water becomes urine.

Nurses will also tell you that water is very important for wound healing for those who are recovering.

I pee like a racehorse...

Typically we do lose a lot of water through the ilieo since a functioning large intestine reclaims fluid from bowel movements.

Me?  I hardly pee. = dehydration. so I have to get the fluids I.V. wise.. 12-14 pounds/per/wk. This is why I am seriously going into the Gattex injections.. (?) I cant go anywhere...

Not because of the emptying.. I find myself on the normal side of the emptying times from you all here.. My kidney's etc. are not getting the fluids.. I should be better after 3 1/2 years.

Cross, to much water washes out the salt that we need also.. So that adds to the emptying.. IT is a hard find for us to figure out our bodies.. Hope your doing better now.. It can be a slow go but we get there.. Like pilling taffy.....but not that much fun............. We r family here so as myself, have found where the normal is and then play it by ear.. Have a nice day.M.

I think I must be really lucky , I empty about 5 or 6 times a day , it used to be a lot more , I'm about 15 months post surgery , only have a stumpy bit of colon left , I empty before I go to bed usually about 1 am , and I am fine until about 8 or 9 am , I do burp the bag during the night if the gas builds up but I generally get a decent nights sleep (rest ) without having to empty ,

I eat most everything and I ensure everything is moving along nicely with a few cups of nice coffee(Nespresso) with cream during the day .

Tony, you are lucky-but that little of colon helps too. Either way we do HAVE TO  empty..  Are you able to get out for trips etc.? without major worries?  I am sure that you as I, are ready for such and emergency..--in the car or walking in the woods.. I think  that your doing great in such a short amount of time.. In many areas, I am still a new-be.. So any input you have to offer me I take in with much gratitude. I don't have much of the gas issues.. But if I get into the Gattex injections, that may become as issue as the say.. Still working on that issue WITH my husband in tact. Paper work going now---------- I need a life..  And I am ready to get up and go places besides infusions.. Time will tell........... Thanks Tony. :-) Best to your and yours. M.

I've been more annoyed with having to pee than having to empty a dozen times a day. Interestingly enough, even I pee a lot (clear and odorless), my output is often quite thick - nearly what normal stool would look like sometimes.

I do have to be careful with that since I don't want it to turn into a problem, but I wonder if my guts have just adapted maybe too well to reabsorbing fluids.

My nephrologist  (kidney doctor ) warned me to be careful to pee . If I stop urination,  I am in big trouble,  even though fluid is leaving my body. It is not carrying out the poisons filtered from the blood. It only the excess fluid in the intestines.

What I am trying to say is don't stop peeing. Emptying your bladder is VERY IMPORTANT.

I use a midi size one piece pouch and I empty my pouch at least thirteen times (including at least three times during my sleeping hours) each day.  I try to empty it when it's no more than a half full but in reality, I find my pouch being more than 2/3 full most of the times.  What's interesting is that after I eat, I always have lots of liquid immediately which I empty several times and then some hours later, I have some thicker output which I empty one or two times.  The amount of liquid I lose each day is almost frightening as I don't think I am drinking that much (even if I try to drink as much as possible to avoid dehydration).  I don't know where all this water comes from ...

Today I had some coconut yoghurt and a bottle of green vegetable juice at a Whole Foods shop in London.  During the 30 minutes bus journey to go back home, my pouch became at least 90 perfect full (although I used the facility just before I left the shop) and I was so afraid that it might burst ...  After I got off the bus, I had to carry my pouch with one hand while I carried my heavy shopping bag with the other hand.  I was so relieved when I arrived home safely :D

Well ! Kyla, that was a trip! My ostomy friend and I decided to go out and walk around the nice shops in West Hartford (classy place) Then decided to have a hot fudge sunday for a treat.  Well, when going back to our car, --- we also ran like crazy to the car!!  that ice cream just hit home fast! We just laughed as we slished sloshed away and carrying our pouches to find the car in the parking garage.. IF it wasn't for our laughing I dont think those rich people would have noticed us.. But we did look out of place..  So happy you made it home when u did!! I think we all have this in the back of our minds tho..  Glad I have a car and not to relay on the bus for shopping--your dong good girl!! Giant steps for you huh?

I empty like you.. I am going back to crackers at night and mid day again.. I too, wonder where all that water is coming from.. but it comes huh?  = dehydration.. but we keep on trying.. Best to you. M.

Vegetable juice is known to do this to a lot of people. Certain juiced vegetables may cause more of a laxative effect than others.

For me, the more green the juice, the more of a laxitive it is. V8 and tomato based juices don't cause me trouble.

Eric and others, thank you for your advice.  I love non-sweet cold pressed green vegetable juice - more than sweet fruits smoothies.  On that day, I had it with yoghurt (although it was not animal milk yoghurt), so perhaps the laxative effect was more powerful.  I should apply this strategy next time I have a blockage like symptom ...

I should certainly try V8 very soon.

Marcie, I confess that I have misbehaved in a similar way, by now, not only once but twice but on both of the occasions I really had no choice - my pouch was about to burst and if I had waited for another 30 seconds, it would have become loose or even come off!

Kiya, Its  not  miss behaving.. Just food for thought on impulse..  Sometimes, we just want to do something normal when we are not normal.. I shall keep my impulse moods at home.. :-0)

Eric has show you and us the way of the healthy  drinks  and what may come of them.. Trial and error..

Yes dear Kiya, you got lucky and God was guiding you.. This is a fear that we all carry with us when we are out on our own........ Takes practice.. But I have never thought of being on a bus with no privacy and having to use our emergency empty bag..  Next time get off the bus and find a rest room if u feel that things are not comfortable..

Empting our pouches are not on the old us  basis.. Talk about unpredictable huh? But that is us now..

When r u going to Japan again?  My heart goes with you during this.. keep me/us posted.. As always, a hug goes with you everywhere.. Marcie..  Keep your chin up!!
