A friend of mine mentioned a product by Coloplast that I haven't used before called the Brava Barrier Cream

It's supposed to moisturize and act as a barrier product, which is pretty interesting.

Has anyone tried it?

I know this is four years old, but I was going to ask a similar question.

So, BUMP! LOL

Cheers!

@kiltedwolf Welcome to the forums. Even after 4 years, this is not a product I've tried. LOL

Are you looking because you have a specific issue you're trying to solve?

Hi Eric!

Not really a specific issue, beyond one spot under my stoma from a mild leak. Still trying to decide what’s constitutes a leak, versus just itching from getting used to wearing an appliance.

I’m only three weeks post-op, so still working out the kinks. But your site and videos I’ve been perusing for over six months, which gave me a leg up pre- and post-operation. I’ll post an intro later today.

This product just seemed a nice alternative to the sprays and wipes, possibly promoting “better” skin health, especially if it contains vitamin E. I’ll pick some up today and let you know what I think after a few trials.

Cheers!

When you remove your wafer have a look at the underside (the sticky side) and if you see stool then you had a leak. If you simply see moisture or a swollen wafer then it's totally normal.

Itching can sometimes be a result of leaks, but sometimes our skin just itches. Even 7+ years out and without leaks, I sometimes have temporary itchiness under my wafer. I don't worry about it unless my skin is broken or looks irritated. It did happen more during the first few years as my skin got used to wearing an appliance.

I'd love to hear how it goes!

Hi All. Just over this past year I have been using a little post shaving balm. The brand is Nivea for sensitive skin. It doesn’t contain alcohol and when rubbed well in drys well so it doesn’t effect the wafer. I have to say I am pleased with the results. It may not suit everyone but just throwing it out there.😀

@john68 What benefits are you noticing, John? I'm familiar with the Nivea brand, but don't really use it.

Hi Eric, I had a little redness on my skin below the stoma. It was probably a sweat rash and while it wasn’t sore I thought if the shaving balm works for my neck maybe it would do the job. Even after one appliance change the difference was remarkable. Plus it’s not interfering with the wafer sticking. I use sparingly about once a month now.

@veganostomy

Checked the underside of my wafer, and it looked pretty clear, so my itching is probably just getting used to things. Thanks for the tip!

I used a barrier ring for the first time, and it appeared to do its job, as my skin seemed improved (also crusted the spot). I am going to ask my stoma nurse about possibly "needing" a convex wafer, as with the barrier ring, it looks like a smaller portion of my stoma is showing (I have a stoma of ~1"), and I don't want to stifle the poor fellow.

I also used the Cavilon barrier cream to day, along with a little Trio barrier spray right around the stoma for crusting. I'll report back in a week or two with my findings.

Cheers,

James

Yes, I'd like to know how things go, especially with the Cavilon cream, which I haven't used before.

Just keep in mind that the more products you use at one time, the more opportunities for complications. My suggestion is always to use the minimum number of products to get your desired result.

Good luck!

I have used Cavilon Cream before and found it greatly effected my wafer from sticking. Seemed very greasy and oily.   I learned that if I used a barrier wipe afterwards, it helped but didn't see any benefit and simply stopped using it.  I use Coloplast Mio products.

I thought I would jump in here. 😀 My ostomy nurse recommended Cavilon cream. Another patient had told her it was good and didn’t affect adhesion. I bought some and used it under my wound dressing, as that skin is a mess too (over two and a half years of various dressing and tapes will do that). I used it very sparingly and rubbed it in quite well and still found the skin a bit greasy and didn’t think the adhesive stuck as well as usual. Was glad I used it under wound dressing rather than ostomy. As far as a lotion goes, it was nice, but the claim that it won’t affect adhesion didn’t hold true for me personally. 😀

That's a shame, but at least you tried it out for yourself :)

Hi everyone!

I have now used the cream a few times -- not really enough to make a firm determination either way, but I though I would chime in. Also, Eric makes a very good point about using the minimum number of products -- I concur.

You must use the cream very sparingly -- pea-sized or smaller, and rub it in until your finger(s) are dry and creating friction. As I stated, I have only used it a few times and it possibly seemed to affect adhesion in one or two places, along the very edge of my wafer (Hollister New Image tape border; once with Coloplast Sensura Mio). The New Image tape boarder remains completely stuck down when no product at all is used, just bare skin.

The barrier cream was comfortable and kept my skin nice under the wafer, but not really any different from using no product. Remember I am a new ostomate, on week five plus one from my surgery. I will report back on this thread from time to time, and use the cream from time to time to better judge its effectiveness, or not. For now, Eric's advice to use a few products as you are able seems sound advice.

Cheers!
