On different cyanoacrylates: I am not even close to an expert, and had to look this up. All cyanoacrylates are of the form CH2=C(C≡N)COO-X 'X' represents different things attached to the core cyanoacrylate bit that does the actual bonding. The X will change things like how flexible the resulting polymer is, or how irritating to tissue the unreacted glue is. Standard superglue (where the X is an ethyl group, meaning a short 2 carbon chain) is known to be more irritating than surgical glue (where the X is an octyl group {8 carbon) or butyl group {4 carbon}) though at least one company is selling an ethyl medical superglue called Epiglu. (See a list at: https://www.healthline.com/health/super-glue-on-cuts ) My non professional (and not medical advice) hunch is that if ordinary superglue works for you then it is fine to use as a less expensive skin protectant, but that in the context of someone with sensitive skin you would probably want the 'medical' stuff. Poking around a bit, it looks like there is research into CA adhesives where the attached group is an ether (with an oxygen replacing one of the carbon links) and these are less irritating. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4059060/ But it would be a huge research project to find the information. One example that I found for sale is https://www.resinlab.com/cynergy-zero-instant-adhesives/ but we are talking $$ just to get in the door. -Jon I don't know the difference not having used marathon. What I can tell you is when I have super glued my fingers together and splashes on my fingers, that superglue it not flexible and if put under cold water glazes and peeling off fairly easily usually with skin attached ;-S. Superglue prefers a very flat non flexible surface. Not sure how different superglue and skin glue (sutures) are? Colostomy Jan 2020 I totally agree with Chris, I can’t believe that this is even being discussed. Superglue can react with different material and cause heat and severe burns 🥵. I apologise if I am offending 🙏 their are many routes to heal skin and help with better adhesion ileostomy 31st August 1994 for Crohns The discussion is relevant because people use and have success with one type of cyanoacrylate skin protector, and apparently at least one other person has used a much more common and less expensive cyanoacrylate. I stand by my statement that if you are concerned about skin irritation then you should stick with the medical cyanoacrylate, but that if you've found that the common 'superglue' works then it isn't such a crazy thing to use. Personally, if I were going to try a cyanoacrylate skin protector, I would start with the medical one. I would not start with 'super glue' because if it didn't work I'd have no way of knowing if CA is not beneficial for me or if I was being irritated by the regular (more irritating) adhesives. If I found I needed to use tons of the stuff, then I would start looking for less expensive options, and I'd try them on more robust parts of my body, not tender skin next to my stoma. Well before the medical cyanoacrylate was approved, my father told stories of ordinary superglue being used in place of stitches. -Jon severe burns from a thin film of super glue? any references on this? I'm a bit skeptical on this comment. I too have gotten super glue on my fingers, I would have remembered a severe burn. let's get the facts about this before making suggestions to use or not use. the surgeon told me I was super glued back together. couple days after surgery he pushed pretty hard on the incision and said "see nothing happened". If you want proof get a piece of cotton, put some glue on it!! ileostomy 31st August 1994 for Crohns If you want proof get a piece of cotton, put some glue on it!! You mean, like this: @jeff Jeff, I use Dial antibacterial when I change, also - the liquid kind - just a very small amount, then rinse it off in the shower. It seems to really help - doesn’t dry the skin out, my skin seems to like it, and the adhesive backing on my flange holds up as well as with no soap at all. Colostomy 4/30/18.
I love the smell of coffee in the morning. It smells like .... victory.
