I wonder what level needs to be reached for tap water to smell like a public pool, because our water can sometimes be so bad that just running the shower (not being in it) can burn my eyes. At one point, I remember it being so bad that we had to get shower head filters just so my skin wouldn't burn from the water.

This hasn't been an issue in recent years, but I can guess that some places may still experience this from to time.

It likely isn't what's causing the Chelly issues, and I agree that acidic output is probably a more likely culprit. And yes, very easy to test!

there's lots of info online about drinking water and pool chlorination, seems most towns use chloramine for drinking water(more stable).   and what is recommend and what comes out of your faucet may be totally different.
