@squeakyandliza ... YAY Liza!!! I'm so proud of you trying the jeans & the hot tub!! I hope you keep trying things you miss, including corn. Corn is my favorite. Veggie of all of them. I still eat corn on the cob & kernel corn, frozen or canned, canned breaks down easier, but I spit out the shell in a napkin if I don't have a good for to mix it in my stomach good ⅚ Distribution is important. Its too dangerous in my guts with all wrap around scar tissue. Maybe try cream corn when you need the flavour. I use cream corn on top of mashed potatoes & it's a good combination, same with canned tomatoes yummy! Mixing foods when I/you eat, as in something that can be difficult to digest with something like mashed potatoes helps me a lot when it's digesting. Keep trying different foods though. Everything in moderation to start. I wear a one piece pouch. I prefer to wearJeans with elastic waiste bands all around. It allows for pouch expansion or sudden gas build up have room. I have to have pants altered to pull the elastic waiste in bcuz I prefer a size larger, sometimes over a regular size for times my guts aren't thrashing around, so I typically have 2 sizes of pants. That said, my best discovery in the last five years is that I love to wear leggings. I buy a size larger & much prefer the leggings from a store called "Cozy." There leggings are perfect in stretch, but here's the GRAND KICKER!! Bcuz I have an 18" rise from my crotch to above my pouch, I wear them, BACKWARDS!!! Lol! You read it here first! I've lost the fat off my butt, from being malnourished from malabsorption issues & my butt is flat, so taking the fact that clothing allows for people with butts, I just wear them backwards & they come above my pouch easily! Jeans... I wear MATERNITY JEANS !! At 67 it gets you looks at the til, but I don't mind. I sew that stretchy wide band in a fair bit, pie wedge shape, but I don't cut the pie wedge of fabric off that I took in, I leave it folded in the waiste band behind me. You would not believe the comfort of the soft tummy fabric over my tummy & BAG/POUCH! I LOVE the maternity pants from Walmart. I just bought my second pair. Bcuz of where my pouch is & my choice to wear a longer top, which I buy in a larger size for length, worn with the skinny leg maternity jeans, its very comfortable & I even feel pretty again. Walmart seems to have a good maternity center so I have no trouble finding what I like in there & hey, unless you say so, even about wearing the leggings backwards, NOBODY ELSE KNOWS nor can they tell! Good for you trying the hot tub out! I can go 10 min. in one but then I'm out. I also wear the elastic C-shaped tapes for added protection. They can go 10 min. Without softening too much in the hot water before they get soft on the edges. Then to aid in drying, I like to wrap paper towel around the circumference of my pouch, any stickiness is stuck to the papertowel & not my clothing afterwards. I'm mostly out at 10 min. bcuz any longer then my heart starts to really race on me & my head pounds with each heartbeat. So, I'm out of there. Its been several years now, but I just take a long hot bath instead & I really don't miss the hot tubbing. I really hope you have good luck with more of it! Linda @dlkfiretruck Linda, I’m 68, with a head of white hair, but I can tell you that if I was buying maternity pants and someone gave me a sidelong glance at the checkout, I’d give them something to be shocked about. I’d say, “In vitro is a wonderful medical advancement that has allowed me to become a parent and grandparent at the same time!” And then, pat your belly.😂 Laurie Just a semicolon @arichards159 and thats why overalls are king! keeps bag well hid, provides sufficient protection at work as well as 60lb jumping dogs. have taken many direct hits from paws. i would ask why the fear of running? with a colostomy, Ive raced some of the most difficult mnt bike races in the northern mid west . have also been tumbled and trashed by waves surfing kayaks. does your surgeon think you need to be careful? i'd talk to your surgeon and ask about hernia risk. since we do have manmade hernias, it seems best to keep in shape as best as possible to avoid a bad hernia. once given the OK, id work slowly on building up core/ab strength. i kayak without a back rest, sitting up straight really helps core and lower back muscle strengthen up. today ive been lifting 90lb bags of cement off the ground, all core muscles, not really bending at the knees, knee bending doesn't always work on certain objects.. @tigerlily 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 That's hilarious! I wish I'd thought of that and you can bet I'll remember it for next time around! Bonus, I really hope my son is standing there with me if I say that, why not kill two birds with one stone & shock him for a change too! Lolol! Linda @arichards159... LADIES... You know, I recently contacted a company called "thighsociety" , I hope i have that # right, OR whatever it is. I'll go into my email & get the address here later. They make an underwear for woman with curvy & non-curvy bodies. I wrote to the owner/ manager & she was very interested in working with me to find a solution for a replacement for my now needing to be replaced second layer undies that were snug, had a bit of a leg to them & I could wear them over my regular undies. I'm waiting for a reimbursement check to buy a couple pairs from thighsociety. I wore these last longer, snug ones out bcuz I wanted something to hold my pouch close to me without having to wear men's underwear to come over my pouch & to hold my pouch in or to tuck my pouch in my regular underwear. I'm thinking, if enough of us ladies emailed this company that maybe this lady would work with us to find what works, especially if we promised word of mouth advertising and not just to ostomates. I bought my first pairs of those old cotton, longer undies eons ago when I couldn't find a slip to wear under a skirt. I felt they helped me feel a lot more comfy in my skin & I didn't worry about the wind that summer at all either. Maybe check the company out. They were on Instagram when I saw them & emailed the company. Linda @tigerlily haha, I actually buy maternity bands to wear to hold this ostomy in place under my clothing. What made you change from a 2 piece to a one piece? Just curious. I hope to get back into my activelife one piece again. "Simplicity" with a bit of "this costs less". 🤣 One thing about 1pc systems is that they usually have a large wafer, much larger than most 2pc appliances. This means that you have more holding on to your skin, and I find that there's less tugging because of it. But a 1pc has some downsides, like not being able to rotate the bag on-the-fly (i.e. for use with a Stealthbelt), and that it offers a little less protection without the flange of the appliance acting like a little castle for your stoma. Also, the cheapo brand that I use only has 1pc appliances, so I'm kind of stuck either way. WOW I just tried to create my own pockets to go on my pants/underwear. can you send a picture of what you have for a model For sure! I'll set up a separate thread with photos! Just your friendly neighborhood ostomate. and thats why overalls are king! In the cycling world, we have "bib shorts", which are essentially skin tight overalls. Unfortunately, too skin tight, and I can't really wear them with my bag. But I can see how traditional overalls would be a great thing for ostomates. Just your friendly neighborhood ostomate. @veganostomy ...Hmmm... the overalls I know of are pants, loose at the waiste, with the Bib & straps to hold you into them. Unless you enjoy a pouch hanging loose, pulling on your skin, you'd still need to support the pouch next to your body or dealing with the weight of a pouch part full to where you empty it. I'm thinking that having no inner pockets on the overalls/ coveralls, the only benefit for that would be baggy around the tummy/ pouch area. I garden a lot, grooming my dog also a lot & bending over so much does seem to require supporting the pouch onto my/ the human body. Eric, not that you need more work at this time, but would you have handy a link to the non-maternity support bands for that? I'm going to be ordering ladies underwear from "thighsociety" today, that can cover the high stoma/pouch in order for summer support. I miss my old worn out ones so much! I do find having the extra support wearing a one piece is beneficial even when not in the gardens or playing on the floor with grandchildren or my pup... both are busy little puppies, lol! So, again needing support & even protection from leaks due to a slip of a claw into the plastic or with ho lding small children, the extra weight above or on the upper pouch. On the topic of one piece pouches .... I'm interested to know what anyones *one piece pouch* numbers are & who makes them & how long anyone here can go wearing them before the plastic seems to leach odor?? Since the covid pouch disaster, it still seems the plastic Hollister uses is leaching odor SO much sooner, like by day 3, 4 or 5 I notice it, depending on what's been in the bag, even so, even with rinsing it, odor leaches out. Where as before, I could wear a pouch up to 8 or 9 days without that odor. Linda Eric, not that you need more work at this time, but would you have handy a link to the non-maternity support bands for that? You'll want to look for "ostomy wraps", which are designed for people like us, and work better than maternity bands, in my opinion. I have a list of companies who make them HERE, but you'll want to check on availability and their sizes. One thing I'd suggest is sizing down if you are in-between sizes. These tend to stretch over time, and some of my first ones are now too loose to wear (some of it due to weight loss, but mostly because they stretched!). On the topic of one piece pouches .... I'm interested to know what anyones *one piece pouch* numbers are & who makes them & how long anyone here can go wearing them before the plastic seems to leach odor?? The ones that I've been using for probably over a year now are the 1pc bags by a company called "DERAYMI" on Amazon. They are dirt cheap, and I've used both the clip and velcro version. They have filters, which clog easily, unfortunately, so I put tape over them. I usually change my appliance every 5-7 days, but keep in mind that I sweat a lot due to the cycling several times a week. In the winter, I was getting more like 7-10 days. They have cloth fabric on them, but I rip that off before putting on the appliance. The overall quality isn't as good as Coloplast or Hollister, but for a fraction of the price, I won't complain! I will note, however, that some point last year, they changed pretty much everything about the product... I wasn't happy, but they still work. That's one risk with such an obscure brand... lack of consistency in their product, and they could disappear at a moments notice. Just your friendly neighborhood ostomate. @veganostomy well, that makes sense. I was toying around with the idea of going into a 2 piece but I feel less secure, as in odor and if the area where it attaches might come off or leak. My nurses gave me a set of 2 pieces to go home with to get me by. They were ok and same adhesive as my active life but I do understand what you say about the one pieces having less room to hold on to the skin and more pull. In your instance of the stealth belt you would basically have to put the bag on sideways, but I don't know how people are emptying these sideways bags when they wear them that way. I keep forgetting you have to buy your own so I can understand going with cheaper. @veganostomy , oddly enough ive never thought much about wearing the riding bibs. you could try on one size bigger to get more room, lycra goes a long way. i order one size larger with wet suits, gives a little more room without being baggy, performance doesn't take a big hit.. i also ordered my last biking shorts one size larger. LK,yes, those are good comments that a beginner would make. but arent we here to help beginners avoid those mistakes you mention? who and why does someone normally wait til the bag is real full before emptying. i'll empty my bag with a tablespoon or 2 in it, why not! but thats the difference between a colostomy and an iloestomy. who and why does someone normally wait til the bag is real full before emptying. I do, but there are reasons: you could try on one size bigger to get more room, lycra goes a long way. I've tried this with the regular cycling shorts, but then they just don't fit right. Legs too loose, chamois too big, etc. I do have a pair of bib shorts that I tried on the other day while outside for a ride. I knew my stoma would be rather inactive, but even then, the amount the bag filled before I could get to a toilet was not ideal. Just your friendly neighborhood ostomate. @veganostomy. THANK YOU ERIC! Those are all very acceptable reasons. You can add to that list, the cost of M9 for those of us who use it in their pouches, as I do with my rapid & often back to back filling service from my ostomy! Lol! I count my M9 DROPS that go into my pouch & as my diet remains familiar most weeks to a month, I get one month from an 8 ounce bottle of M9 by counting the drops going into my pouch, I get one month per bottle. Emptying with a tablespoon or two in it is a complete waste of drops unless you are at the end of the filling service & are leaving the privacy of home. As you kindly said, ileostomies alone, but with the added SGS produce a number of different and very unpredictable challenges. I for one find the M9 very unreasonably priced so on my tight budget, they are a privilege to use, buy hey, they do the work great as they are meant to and I don't care for the what I call, "the Linus Syndrome" around me. . . (Linus, from Charlie Brown!)) Lol!) Linda cheers on the go bag tip. it helps A LOT to know you have everything you need "just in case" i had a massive leak in hong kong at an amusement park on my first trip after surgery and that SUCKED !!!! I ended up not having a change of clothes with me and ended up having to wash my shirt and shorts in the toilet. ive NEVER left the house without backup clothes ever again. ALWAYS BE PREPARED FOR WORST CASE SCENERIO !!! i went to a 2 pc almost 2yrs ago. i use the B Braun Flexima. 55mm size. they arent cheap and not easily available in NA anymore. BUT. they work great. im super gassy so i love being able to "burp" the bag ( im so over worrying what people think im doing when i burp it in public especially the golf course. im thinking of having a tshirt made that says i fart 2 handed ) they offer more protection from impact in that area ive never had odor issues from any of the bags i use. i thoroughly rinse my bag every time i empty using a bum gun. luckily they are standard over here. @davidinthailand oh my, that amusement park experience sounds horrifying. You are a strong person to get thru that. id be in tears. @dlkfiretruck Linda ~ You eat popcorn? You are, indeed, brave. It’s my absolute favorite treat in the world and after five years, I haven’t tried it yet.
