I know I've asked this question before but they keep making changes to our soaps.

Has anyone found a good soap to use to clean the ostomy area? They tell us no oils or moisturizer or fragrance should be in the soaps in order to get a good seal.

I used to be able to use ivory but they are now lifting oil in it as part of their fragrance. Dial white has also kicked up fragrance and moisturizer. Plain water doesn't cut it.

I've ordered these (castile soap towlettes) before, and they seem to work fine without leaving any residue, but I do still wipe the area clean with a gauze soaked in plain water.

Chelly, Eric has a good suggestion about the Castile soap towelettes. Castile soap is a classic olive oil soap that is very easy on skin without adding extra oil. Chelly, all soap has an oil base of some kind - don’t let that put you off. The combination of oil and lye, (which all soap is made of) produces a chemical reaction that makes something entirely different from the ingredients - soap! So even though it is made of oil and lye, soap is neither one of those when it’s finished. If you have a health food store near you, go in and ask about a plain Castile soap with no additives. That shouldn’t be too difficult to find, and it should work for you. As Eric said, always rinse with lots of water after washing with soap.

@tigerlily hi, and yes, I've thought about Castile. Maybe I'll order some with my next order of gloves or see if I can get a sample from them. For now I've found dove sensitive to be the one to use until I can find better. I wish they'd stop messing with our soaps.

Someone here mentioned a product to me once called enzymatic rain which is unscented and is used to clean the peristomal area and can be used for odor control as well. I see on their site that they also have an adhesive remover in which I'm interested. I called and left a message asking for a call back about possibly getting a sample first to make sure I don't get any allergic reactions first before purchasing. Don't know that they will.

@ veganostomy , I'mncurrently looking online trying to find a fragrance free Castile soap wipes.

@bobw hi,

Thanks for the reply.  I've looked into pears before and it has a whole lot of moisturizing properties due to the high amount of glycerin and oils that they  put in it. I used it once a few years ago and I do remember the seal failing from using it. Thank you for the reply though and trying to help.

I'm waiting on this new thing  someone mentioned to me called enzymatic rain that im wanting to try out. It's a deoderizer and a stoma clenser. As for now im.stuck with dove sensitive. It has moisturizer in it but so do all the others. It just seems the best of all the bad if that makes sense.

I'll surely be posting about my results from using this enzymatic rain when it gets here. Im hoping it will work out.

I liked Erics idea of castile soap wipes only I have trouble ordering things online. I could buy a bar of it at my local.store though to try which i may pick one up tomorrow.

I received my samples of enzymatic rain stoma clenser and odor eliminator (all in one). I used it for pouch change tonight after my shower.

It comes in a spray bottle. I found that spraying it on a damp paper towel or 4x4  non woven gauze works better than just spraying it to the ostomy area. I used adhesive remover wipes first and then cleaned with soap and water. I rinsed off and then used the enzymatic rain. If I didn't use adhesive remover I would have left the soap step out and just would have went with the enzymatic rain by itself and rinse.

I must say that it works really well to clean the stoma  area. It also deoderized the area. Not really a scent but you feel like you smell really, rrally fresh.

You can also use it as a inside pouch deoderizer. I give it a 10 for performance and scent.

I was sent a sample of room deoerizer spray  as well and it is a very fresh scent too. I think i will be ordering a bottle by phone. There are a few places that sell online.

I never made it to the store so I will go today sometime. Going to pick up a castile soap bar as well. Id like to give that a shot and a try too to see what works out better.

@chelly Another option is an antibacterial soap called Dexedrin 4.  Available from your pharmacy over the counter.  In any event, after using whatever cleanser you settle on, be sure to rinse really well.  That is likely why I have had zero issues with Pears.

@bobw hi yes, thst is the equivalent to what we call hibiclens here in US. I have used that before when I was in the hospital to change my bag. Good idea.

I wish I could use pears. It seems nothing wants to rinse off well lately.

So after using the enzymatic rain again a couple times,  I found it does not work out that well for me. It's leaving a residue that's not that easy to get off. I really wanted it to work out . It was so nice of the man to send me the samples. Oh well, I tried and another one bites the dust. Next is the castile soap and hoping I don't forget it next time I go to the store.

Thus far, the only soap i can seem to find that would be ostomy friendly here in the US these days would be dove sensitive and it's not all that ostomy friendly either but its better than the others.

There was talk about making ones own soap on here before and i looked into it and may just try that one day. The melt and pour looks very simple to do.

And you control the ingredients, which is by far the biggest benefit. Don't want fragrance? Don't add it! Don't need moisturizer? Don't add it! 😆

If you go that route, please your experience.

@veganostomy Yes,  Exactly!! I really want to try it. Craft stores sell the heat and pour soap and the molds. Just have to see if I can get a ride to the stores that have it because I refuse to put my cards online after getting hacked a couple times.

I will defiantly post about it when I can get it and do it.

Yeah, that's a valid concern! Try to look up "virtual credit cards" or even prepaid cards for online stuff. That puts a line of defence between you and any potential fraudster/thief.

Credit card fraud seems to be an ongoing area of concern.  Firstly, I only use sites that are reputable.  If you buy something off a Russian or Asian site of questionable reputation, you can expect to be defrauded.  I originally went with a prepaid card and that worked out OK, not great, but OK.  Then I got myself a second card from a major credit card company (eg. Mastercard) and set a hard ceiling of $500.  After a little explaining, my bank liked the idea as it limited their exposure as well as mine.  The credit card company also refunds any purchases that are deemed to be fraudulent.  Then, of course, they replace the card.

There are one time use virtual cards available online.  They are sort of like a prepaid card that you use only once.

@bobw hi, yeah, I only used my cards on Walmart, target and Amazon when it happened tp me. All 3 of those accounts were hacked in the same day. Plus my bank. So I rid of all and got a new bank. No more Amazon, Walmart or target and have to just do everything the hard and old fashioned way.

I did buy a prepaid card once but then I was spending more money because I had to pay an activation fee erc..
