Hi Folks, I thought I understood the reason for using skin prep, to prepare a dry surface with the help of a stoma powder, when the skin around the stoma is irritated or raw. I've recently read some things that make it seem that people are using skin prep just as a matter of course prior to applying a new appliance. Is this true? I was always told that the best surface for applying your appliance is clean, dry skin, with nothing else between you and your appliance. Can I get some clarity on this? Thanks! Terry I change every 4 days and use a little bit of powder right around my stoma and then use barrier spray, again just right around. This has worked well for me and kept me from getting any areas of red around my stoma. It likely depends on each person's unique situation. My stoma is only 1/2 inch high and output is often fairly liquid, so this helps I believe, to keep the barrier ring, which absorbs any moisture, from transmitting that to my skin. In our ostomy world we have many products at our disposal. Yes it’s very confusing about what should I use and if I ain’t using am I doing something wrong. All we need is the wafer and bag. The additional products are there to help with any problems. Dips sore skin etc. Start basic and find out what suits and works for you. Yes over use or over applying products can be problematic. ileostomy 31st August 1994 for Crohns I use Cavilon np sting barrier film all around the stoma area before putting on the appliance. If the wafer get wet in between changes, I use a hair dryer on lowest temp to dry. I rarely have rash problems using this method. I don't use any kind of skin prep and for the most part I don't recommend it to anyone really. Skin prep can interfere with the adhesion of some appliances, and some manufacturers will even suggest against the use of them for some of their products. Clean, dry skin is all I recommend. 👍 Just your friendly neighborhood ostomate. I use Cavilon np sting barrier film all around the stoma area before putting on the appliance. If the wafer get wet in between changes, I use a hair dryer on lowest temp to dry. I rarely have rash problems using this method. I'm with you on the Cavilon. Until I found it, I had rash problems from the adhesive in the two piece Hollister convex wafers I use. Using the Cavilon, I have zero rash problem, and my skin around my stoma is healthy and happy! Of note, I can wear the same wafer and bag for 5 days between changes without any skin issues. Saves a fortune on supplies! Retired engineer, now goatherd I have had so many problems with my skin. When it is really macerated, I use Marathon. When it is just regularly irritated, I use a barrier wipe. I’m not sure if it helps, but I feel like it might protect my skin a little. On the rare occasion that there is no irritation, I just apply the ring (to ward off leaks) and the wafer directly to my clean skin. I have tried the cavillon cream and really like it, but I don’t think it lives up to its claim that it doesn’t prevent the wafer from sticking. -Liza If and when I do have irritation, i use a prescribed steroid cream very lightly let it dry, then I use a spray barrier. Let that dry, the apply hollister two piece. I have sensitive skin and any appliance makes me itch and break out in bumps. Cavillon no sting barrier spray has been a godsend. Hi Terry... I use the Adhesive Remover Spray/Wipes and the Barrier Spray/Wipes, the B.W. only to add extra to the skin around my stoma if I feel I missed a spot or want a bit more coverage. I learned about the sprays here and love them but do wish for environmental reasons they were not canned. I have sensitive skin & the one time I forgot the barrier spray, I paid for it dearly. I strongly feel the barrier spray has protected my skin royally over the years. I have sprayed it on my "arm" to see what it does once dry & it does create a light film. Linda
