When I sleep on my side at night the bag eventually becomes slightly filled, and pulls due to gravity.  My light belt tends to loosen up and does not help,  anyone figure out a way to prevent pulling for those of us who are too lazy to empty it at 4 in the morning?

If the belt doesn't work, it seems some sort of tape may be needed.  But then you have the issue of removing a good solid tape job every morning. Maybe just one strip of good tape across the bag might do it.

I just get up and empty it. I have installed motion sensor mild LED night lights in the nearby bathroom, so I don't have to find light switches and get hit with bright light. I don't worry about perfect cleaning of the outlet, that can wait till morning. I can get the deed done without becoming too awake. Before the ileostomy I had the need to hit the can at least once a night, often more. So I already had the lighting set up.

Sometimes the bag is very full. Rolling onto it may make for a much more annoying situation in the middle of the night.

Why?

I sleep on my right side. My stoma is on the left. I use the Hollister 2 piece system, and simply rotate my bag so that it is hanging down towards the bed as I'm on my side. No belt or support garment worn, and everything stays nicely in place with no leaks.

LOL. As much as I hate to say it, and I'm you don't want to hear it, but emptying the bag is going to be the best solution.

I wouldn't trust a filling/full bag in the middle of the night no matter what other solution I've implemented.

Not just because it could leak or blowout, but the pressure on your wafer (not just from pulling, but from pushing outwards) will shorten your wear time.

I too have come to accept that getting up during the night to empty my bag is just a part of my life now, and if I only get up once during the night, it is a good night. I like to read when I go to bed, so I make a point of emptying when I am done reading, before I go to sleep. When I do that, I usually only have to get up once more. But I do have a lot of trouble sleeping, so if I wake up in the night and feel it starting to fill, I’ll just get up. I don’t love it, but I do it.

@squeakyandliza Hi Liza, I don’t sleep very well, either, and I am a wild sleeper - side, back, other side, stomach, repeat, randomize order, repeat, often for hours …. And once I fall asleep I am like a rock. Here is where I am really lucky: I don’t often need to empty my bag at night. That said, I always wear cotton Granny undies and sometimes also a StomaCloak to bed, just in case.

@llholiday...Yay, a granny undies lady! Lolol!  Can you please tell me where you get your granny undies???? I got mine several years back, then called Pantyloons & the store that I bought them from staff say they never carried them! UGH!!! A gal doesn't forget a hack like that! Lol! I still wear the stretchy shirts when needed for extra support when on my feet all day, but these undies are a blessing in disguise! I love the longer legs on them in this heat too plus they're not too warm to wear.  Besides I am a Granny of almost 7 now,  so no oppologies for wearing the granny undies! Lol!

I sleep on my back &  when ** I do side sleep** which is rarely, I use made a small cushion to stuff under the bag for no pulling situations.  If your not a sewer the smaller size squishimals make a good support cushion also. The one I use goes from my finger tips to the 1/2 way between my wrist & elbow size. Very washable because my grands have them & wash them & gave me a candy corn one as a gift.  Lol, silly things are cute, cuddly, soft & moldable.

My eyes are intolerant to electronic light after an hour so finding these granny undies things on the internet takes forever. If you have a link I'd appreciate it if your ordering on line.  Thankyou!!

Hi all,

I am definitely a side sleeper, but do sleep on both sides. This requires me waking up just enough to do so. Most nights I don't have the need to empty the bag - when I do it's to empty the bladder! However, the other day, I did wake up to a extremely full bag and ended up replacing the whole kit and caboodle! Fortunately (and miraculously!) I had no leaks.

@dlkfiretruck Hi Linda, I wear the cotton grannies with elastic around the legs, full size (not hipsters or bikini) Vanity Fair brand, large and loose! Which means they do not provide much support for the bag, but they do the job, especially at night, keeping the bag from flopping around.

I have some Bali brand briefs that have a little stretch in the fabric, and they are pretty nice for during the day if I am wearing dress pants that might show an outline.

And those stretchy camisoles - wonderful invention, so glad you told us about them! I have bought when they were on sale (Jockey brand) and now have several.
