Hello friends, Hope some still remember me, I used to be a lot more active here, but things go a bit side ways, and I have not been on for a long time. I have a question to who ever can answer this. I had a full abstraction on July 29, and after a few hours of pain, I took myself to the E.R. I was admitted and my stomach was pumped out. By July 31 I was released, and the plumbing was work, since then I have had diarrhea and anything I ate come out with in an hour, in liquid form. I did all what I was told, including not eating for 24 hours, then eating just crackers. By August 7 decided to try grilled chicken which stopped the diarrhea, and got things better. Today I tried to eat regular small meal, and right out I got the diarrhea again. I have a colostomy, it is now 4 years old. Any one had this? how did you solve this?

Appreciate any help in the subject.

Dan

Hi Dan,

I am newbie w colostomy since February (2021) but I’ve had three small bowel obstructions from adhesions since then! The pain is excruciating! But I have learned that some liquid stool is normal after you’ve been through that. Trust in your body to heal itself, but it does take time! Eat really easy to digest foods and drink tons of water. I mean really, really hydrate. Give it time. Don’t eat unless you are really and truly hungry. My sympathies to you!!
Never overeat and be sure to chew your food totally well. If you do these things you will be better off in many other ways  as well. Listen to your body.

Dan, it's nice to see you, although I wish the circumstances were different.

Is it possible that you caught something from the hospital? Obstructions can cause all kinds of funny things to happen, but I'm not 100% sure that what you're experiencing is a result from the obstruction itself.

Were you given anything like antibiotics or other meds that might disrupt your intestinal flora?

Dan,

I have had several serious bowel obstruction episodes due to adhesions. My experience is that it takes a few weeks to get back to normal. I agree with Viv's advice with the difference that once I am back on solid food, I start with a low fiber diet eating smaller meals (4-6) spaced throughout the day even if I am not hungry. I also take a probiotic. Hydration is very important especially if you have diarrhea. Hope this helps.

danbh... Hi There!! So glad you popped in again! I had noticed you hadn't been around as usual. I hope everything is okay!  Welcome back even if its temporary,  you know where to find us when you have time or just need a hand or an ear.

I'm so sorry to hear you've had a rough time!   Blockages suck!  I have an Ileostomy so I can only base what I've learned on my experiences with blockages, some led me into surgery.

First, I want to clarify, when you say you had your stomach pumped, do you mean an NG Tube?  Any time I've had a blockage there was noticeably thicker output passing causing more pain then the arrival of the usual bowel output from my stoma. This made me very aware the blockage had actually softened & passed. Then It was business as usual.

I agree with those above, after a blockage, eat carefully & stay well hydrated. Its not too late,  Start with softer foods, often more like soups for 3 or even 4 days. Cream soups, veggie  or squash soups they are very good for nutrients or make your own homemade soups are alway best as you get what you enjoy most. If your Vegan you have more control over whats in them also.

I like to make 3 or 4 kinds of soups & freeze them in portions for times I'm not well & they do come in very handy!! So do used yogurt containers for freezing them. Be sure & label & date them. Drink fruit smoothies with yogurt & what ever fruits you enjoy. If your not into smoothies, try out watery fruits such as Watermelon, Honeydew Cantalope.  Portions & Diabetes are important & if I remember right aren't your diabetic? Plz correct me if I'm wrong.  Drink before, during & after your meals & in-between too. Sometimes I've forgotten to manage these things & end up in trouble all over again. If you need some recipes *of sorts* lol, or just ideas I can go into more depth for what I call obstruction survival! lol!

Slowly add in other foods & really  watch your portion sizes. Eat small portions more often thru the day 5 or 6 times plus watery fruits in-between. Softer meals, if you eat meats, salmon, cod or...?  ground meats are more easily digestible then steak, lol. Chew very well & more if your think you've chewed enough. Try to avoid foods that may bloat you up. Yeast products, breads even some baked goods, biscuits using Baking Soda & Baking Powder can bloat me up. After about 6 or so days & you've slowly added in your usual foods & portions when things are settling down more easily & the usual thickness of output flowing returns then add in your usual diet & amounts but be careful & pay close attention to changes reverting back a little for more control

I hope this helps a bit Dan!! Feel better soon eh!! Let us know how things are settling for you too.

Linda
