Today while driving, I managed to uncouple my 2-piece Hollister bag from the bottom of the flange - it just popped off the bottom.  Best I can tell, it was probably from me tugging on the bag to deal with the seatbelt riding up over my stoma.  Anyway, the interesting part of the story is that I stopped for a bathroom break at a gas station and managed to wander into the store, look through the candy aisle, then the drinks, and finally on the the bathroom, before noticing that I had a large, wet, brown telltale stain working its way down my front toward my knee.  I mean, REALLY noticeable on my khaki pants, and leaving very little to the imagination as to what it was.  I always try to look for the positive, so here goes:

1) I'm on a 3-week road trip from Colorado to Lake Superior (family property) in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.  So, I had lots of clothes, supplies, wipes, and time.

2) NONE of the escaped output found itself onto the leather seats of my car.

3) Since I use M9 deodorant, I may have looked like I pooped in my pants, but I did not smell like I pooped in my pants.

4) There are only a few people cool enough to walk around in public with poop running down the FRONT of their pants and look completely natural doing it, and I am apparently one of them.

So, as I sit in a hotel room with my family in Nebraska tonight after a long shower, I'm in pretty good shape.

Well, since it was in the front, anyone who noticed may have thought you had spilled something on yourself.

PS My two-piece Hollister has done that occasionally, come apart at the bottom.

You’re going to the U.P.? Beautiful place; I am in Duluth

Glenn,

I am reluctant to laugh at this because the last time I laughed at something that happened to you, it happened to me too (rock hard bag flying off after getting out of bed).

I love that we can share things like this here, and we all can relate and/or empathize. I agree with LL. No one would think it was poo being in the front like that. And it is great that you found so many positives in the experience, instead of focusing on the negative. 😀

I hope I can have the same positive outlook if (when) I have something like that happen when we are in Hawaii in October.

Enjoy your nice long vacation with your family!!  Thanks for being such a good role model when it comes to handling ostomy adversity!!

Oh how I've been there Glenn! My two piece Hollister system tends to unsnap at the bottom as well. I'm in a wheelchair, and often bend at the waist to pick stuff off the ground or tend my goats. That's all it takes sometimes to get me unsnapped and leaking!

I've had brown leaks from trying to extend wear one more kayak outing,  but I never have to think about a 1 piece separationing like a 2 piece can and does.     given GH's comment about bending,  this sort of problem would be a weekly nightmare.  2 piece really seems to restrict trying to be/feel  normal.

@dogtalkerer My 2 piece is pretty stiff, as it's a convex skin barrier. That's much of the problem. I'm just careful now that I'm aware of the possibility of it popping open!

Awesome attitude!  You are for sure one of the few cool enough to pull that off with ease.  And you are a good story teller.  Nice build up to the big reveal, with great detail.  Felt like I was there.  :-)  Enjoy the rest of your vacation.  Sounds marvelous!

Glenn, I nearly died laughing at your being cool enough to walk around in public with poop running down your pants. Brilliant sense of humour and attitude!! You are the gold standard for self assurance! Enjoy your vacation.

@dogtalkerer I guess it depends on the needs of each person. A 2 piece works well for me, whereas a one piece would be a nightmare.

Yep my 2 piece works well for me and I do a lot of bending at work. I think a lot depends on the placement of the stoma. It’s great we have so much choice to suit our needs.😀

Glenn,

You are amazing! I hope that I have the ability to bounce back like you did if that ever happens to me. I hope the rest of your vacation goes well!

I agree GH, the rigid wafer can't be too comfortable reaching for the ground from a  sitting position.  have you tried the Mio click mechanical locking system? or the Cymed microskins.

john68 & Tiger, 2 piece systems seem to have a common weak point that many complain about. I only offered a solution.  probably why Coloplast tried the adhesive connection then came up with the click. not sure what your comments suggested for these 2 guys leaks?

@tigerlily Tiger, why is a 1 piece a nightmare?

@dogtalkerer I empty from the top due to pancaking. It’s the only solution that works for me, having tried just about everything else.

As for me, I started with a one piece and stuck with it for several months before trying a two piece system. I have had leaks with both, but them seemed to happen more with the one-piece than the two-piece. I think the biggest benefit to me if the two-piece is I can get a better fit on the wafer without the bag in the way to block my view of what I am doing.

Also, in the beginning of using the two-piece, I felt like the ring where the bag clicks on was too bulky, but now I have found it seems to help prevent as much pancaking.

I don’t know why leaks are less with 2 piece for me, but they are so I’m sticking with them.
