My surgeon says he will leave anus, and sew me up on inside layers, instead of the sewing up outside.  Was told this has a better healing chance...anyone have experience with this type of closure?

Hi Rick. I don't know if its quite the same. But I had a sub total colectomy and was left with a bit of rectum ( like 3 inches ... maybe less) and my anus. It has all healed very well.

Best of luck.

Onset of severe Ulcerative Colitus Oct.2012. Subtotal colectomy with illiostomy July 2015; Peristomal hernia repair ( Sugarbaker, mesh, laparoscopic) May 2017.

@rick I've known people who've had it done like that with success. I'm assuming you (or a home nurse) will be packing the wound on a regular basis and it gets smaller and smaller every time until it's fully closed. That is a good way to heal.

Just your friendly neighborhood ostomate.
