Hi Ladyfox, Welcome to the forum. I can tell you are adjusting well to your stoma. I wear a short bag during the day as I find it easier to work in. Enjoy the site and best wishes going forward 👍👍

Hello Ladyfox, and welcome. Looks like you are already trying out different ways of handling your pouch system and discovering little “tricks” that work for you. I use Hollister two-piece, myself  but I know that the one-piece is low-profile and simple. Much of this is a matter of personal taste and what you like. I have a couple of shorter pouches in a goody bag of samples, have not tried one yet. What I do with my current pouches is fold them at the bottom, towards my body, which makes them a little shorter and less likely to poke. May I say here that it is impressive that you are adjusting so well so soon after your new stoma - good for you! LL

@ladyfox hello and welcome to the forum. I have an ileostomy not s colostomy. I understand I’ve heard that colostomy output has a stronger smell than ileistomys but I do find that hollister M 9 odor eliminator drops help really good with the smells. You just squirt some in the pouch. I put some in every time I empty. Sometimes you’ll need more or less to put in but you will figure that out. I like the M9 because it’s fragrance free so it’s not covering up odors but getting rid or neutralizing them. Some of the others I have found do not work. I’m sticking to my one peice pouch as well. I tend to worry too much about leaking or popping off at work.

@veganostomy Thanks for the reply! Curious as to why you don't use bags with filters or what you don't like about them?

Curious as to why you don't use bags with filters or what you don't like about them?

Several reasons, but keep in mind that this is my own experience:

  1. They don't work as well as I'd like and tend to clog up within about 24h.
  2. With longer wear time, some filters will leak and/or smell. This can vary from brand to brand, but some filters leak very quickly when you have loose/liquid output.
  3. Cost. While not by much, filtered bags tend to cost more than bags without them, and I'm paying out of pocket for supplies.
  4. I find that filtered bags will "rabbit ear" and flop down, which is more than annoying when you're wearing a pouch cover.
  5. Just easier to manage. Since I don't have to worry about a filter, I find that my appliance is just easier to manage.

With a one-piece, I can consistently get 7+ days of wear, which means the filter would be a bother for 6+ days at a time. LOL

@ladyfox

I also prefer no filter for pretty much the same reasons that VO already stated.  The only down side to no filter is in the brand I wear the no filter bags only come in clear (on front side, they still have the fabric on back).

Normally I do not mind this, but when I go to the gym or to swim the top of or the entire bag is at times visible and I would rather it not be a clear bag at these times.

Because I wear a two piece bag system I change the bag type right before I go to the gym, not a perfect solution but it helps.

Filters on ostomy bags are only useful if you replace bag after sleeping horizontally. They are a gimmick like filtered cigarettes

🤣 I love that analogy.

There needs to be a massive prize for whoever designs an implements a working filter for these bags.
