Pros and Cons one peice vs 2 peice?

Hi all, my first and only experience with a 2 peice pouch was that when I sat down the clips that hold the pouch to the barrier gave way in my car and output everywhere. It was a hollister and can’t remember which pouch it was. Also the stoma nurse was the one to put it on for me so not too sure if she attached it good enough or not. As sometimes they are in a hurry.
I am currently complimenting on trying a 2 peice again. But not sure if the same would happen.
For those of you that have tried both 1 peices and 2 peices what are the pros and cons to each and which go you prefer and why?

That's an unfortunate thing to happen, Chelly, but I hope it doesn't discourage you from trying again.

I do have an article comparing the two systems: https://www.veganostomy.ca/1pc-vs-2pc-ostomy-appliance-ostomy-tips/

Anecdotally, I find that a 1pc lasts quite a bit longer than a 2pc, most likely because of the larger surface area.

While very rare, I've had a 2pc separate, but I mean very rarely does this happen. For me, I find it more likely that my bag becomes torn by either my belt buckle or friction from the top of my belt/pants just above the coupling. I haven't had this happen with a 1pc.

One advantage to wearing a 2pc with a mechanical (plastic) coupling, is that it sort of acts like a built-in stoma guard and will offer some level of protection from impact compared to a 1pc.

If you like some of the advantages to a 2pc system, give it another go and just double-check that the coupling is secured.

My reason for a 2 piece is as Eric has said the ring helps protect my stoma against my waist band. It’s really worked out for me over the years. I have tried a one piece which give me good performance but it felt like the stoma was vulnerable.

The Hollister 2-piece works well for me. Occasionally, about once a month or so, mine does start to come apart at the bottom of the coupling. I think this is because of the placement of my stoma and where the coupling has to bend when I am sitting. So …. I try to remember to feel to check that the bottom of the coupling is secure, and to check it in the mirror for any sign of beginning stress/leakage.

Good Afternoon,

I have an innie stoma and use convex barriers, the 2 piece convex barriers are a little bit more ridged than the 1 piece convex barrier and provide me with a better seal that last a bit longer.

I take my bag off when I shower (personal preference no real reason ) and of course I could not do that with a 1 piece.

I have had one incident where the 2 piece popped off while I was rinsing my bag but that was total user error.  I now make a point to hear the click of the barrier and double check the little lock thing is in the locked position.

The down side is the 2 piece has a higher profile than the 1 piece does.

@cygo when you take the bag off of the coupling to shower does  your wafer get wet or do you cover with something?

@llholiday I see yes it sounds like it would be an extra worry for me. I’d be checking the thing all the time at work.

@veganostomy ah, had I searched I would have found that video and info you have up. That would be horrible to have a pouch rip. Im glad it doesn’t happen for you very often.
I guess men can have more challenges with the belts and such. Us ladies can get away with yoga and legging type pants.
yes I may give it trial and order some but only try them out in my two days off for a while just to see the difference but I’ll stick with the mios since this adhesive is the least bothersome that I’ve tried so far.
Ive often wondered if the pros and cons to both comparable. Thanks to all who answered.

@chelly

The wafer gets wet, I rinse it off and sort of flush it out with the shower.

I change out wafers / bags every 4 or so days so I am not worried about longevity of the appliance.

While in the shower once its well rinsed off I can do a good visual check to see how every thing looks and if there is a leak starting.

I time my showers first thing in the AM so the stoma is quiet, or later in the day several hours after lunch if my kid hogs all the hot water in the AM. ;)

Have a good evening.

Does the adhesive in the wafer get wet then? I noticed on wafers there is a bit that is on the inside part where the bag goes.  Then do you blow dry it or let air dry? Don’t mind my questions i just have a curious nature and like learning things ahead.

I don't know for sure, but I would imagine everything gets wet.  I use the Brava protective ring and maybe that helps keep excessive water from getting under the barrier.

I wipe the exterior surfaces off after the shower but not the bit inside the ridged ring where the bag snaps onto. I make sure the attachment ring that mates with the bag ring is dry to ensure it mates well.

I've popped my 2-piece bag off of the flange a couple of times, but it was really full of air both times.  I like two-piece bags, and they have been very reliable for me (Hollister).  All the best!

@glenn-giroir yes I get that!! Even with a one peice. My gosh I wake up in the night like the bag is going to pop!! I can imagine yes if the 2 peice gets gas that could happen.

Well, I guess after thinking long and hard about this and after reading all the input here, I guess for me sticking with a one piece is best in my situation. I guess I’m so afraid of it popping off at work when I’m running around. I’ve looked at the adhesive 2 pieces but you may as well just wear a one piece. It’s basically the same but the real one piece is safer as it’s already connected.

@john68 I totally agree.  With a one-piece, I feel like the stoma is just sitting there waiting for an accident to happen.

@glenn-giroir came back to say that a couple times my convatec durahesive convex active life one peice pouch that I used to wear blew up. The thing was stuck like glue around my stoma and elsewhere but it actually popped the bag from the wafer. Never seen anything like that. Usually the wafer pops off with gas for me. Craziest thing I ever saw. Sometimes i take gas pills per my dr.

Hi everyone,

Just found this site and the related forums and it's my first post.  I'm also a newbie (~30days with a loop colostomy) so this conversation has been helpful!  I've tried both and for me, I prefer the one piece.  I'm a smaller framed woman and the hard plastic of the 2 piece flange sometimes digs into me and gets uncomfortable.  BUT, in my limited experience, I've found that the 1 piece gets a little stinkier, quicker than the 2 piece.  I use Hollister with the filters for both but am wondering if others have experienced this as well?

Also, wondering if anyone has used the shorter length bags.  I see they have a 9" and 7" but am wondering if those aren't as good or just not as practical?

I haven't noticed that a 1pc smells more than a 2pc, but of the bags you have, does the plastic feel the same? Hollister, in the last 12-24 months, have "reformulated" the plastic used in their bags, and they are now thinner than they used to be. I've noticed more smell from the thinner plastic than what I remember with the thicker style.

I no longer use filters on my bags for various reasons, but if they work for you, stick with it.

Also, wondering if anyone has used the shorter length bags.  I see they have a 9" and 7" but am wondering if those aren't as good or just not as practical?

They can be great, but only if your stoma isn't super active. With an active stoma, smaller bags would fill faster and would need to be emptied more often.

The advantage of a 2pc is that you can swap bags for when it suits you. For example, smaller when working out, larger when you sleep.
