glen, what I think you are experiencing are two things, permeability and the rate of permeability of thin film plastics.  the bag film takes on a stink.

the nose knows.......

I see the same thing all the time, 3, 4 or 5 days and the bag stinks, not so much human waste but more a bad morning breathe smell.   good ol sulfurs.

if you have a 2 piece, you could  rinse with water while its attached, then remove it and do a hydrogen peroxide rinse.   put it back on.   i don't think the deodorants will help, but worth a try.

When I notice the smell, the inside of the bag does have the smell of sulfur.  But, the smell I get with the bag sealed is like the faint smell of a baby's diaper.  The interesting thing to me is that it happens only when I have on a two-piece appliance.  I've tried one and two piece Hollister and Convatec appliances.  Never had a single smell from a sealed one-piece bag. The worst was a Convatec 2-piece with accordion flange.  I'm wearing a Convatec one-piece now and happily NO hint of odor after day 2.  I'm not particularly concerned about this, as even with the odor, I'm confident that I am the one one who can smell it, but it sure is nice to have ZERO odor.

Glen, I think this may well get better when you get the M9 you ordered.( if you have not already recieved it))  I use a one piece, but about twice a day I also rub the sides of my pouch together to sort of scrub it and I will also use rubbing alcohol on the outside of the pouch and clean  the vent about once a day or as needed too.  I am so glad I have the alcohol on hand as the other night while holding my baby Grand daughter I had a leak from the vent.  I had not properly closed it.  I guess the weight of baby and the pressure of snuggling her close on my lap  allowed content to be pushed up and out the vent.  This was a first for me.  But knowing I have 99% alcohol to use, made the difference of needing to change the pouch or not, when I had just put a new one that morning.  Your a science teacher, I learned years ago of a homemade recipe from the internet using 3% food grade Hydrogen Peroxide and made a rinse for my pouch with that, also scrubbing the sides together.   I have done this for years now.  I do not notice any of such an odor and like you I am very sensitive to whether I can be "smelled" or not. For the record, it was not odor that led me to the leak holding baby, it was my puppy! lol!  Even my son sitting right beside, had not noticed a smell.  Is it true that we need Hydrogen Peroxide to break down waste?  I believe this is why the creator of the recipe I use added it to the little list.  Be well and stay strong!  You are doing amazingly awesome on  this journey for a better life of health and fun and teaching.   Have any students contacted you yet?  My, what I would have given to have an adult to talk to me about what I was experiencing at that age!  They are so lucky to have you!

the diaper smell sounds like a micro tent problem.  this is the reason I stopped using hollister.  i liked the bags but after repeat bending for a couple of days the flange would tent.  very small but enough for a pin sized direct vent hole.

Interesting topic, I use a 2 piece convatec with the expandable flange and after day 2 I can smell it. I have a colostomy and the faint smell really bothers me, and yesterday I had my check in with Ostomy nurse. She advised for me the problem is pancaking where the output doesn't drop efficiently and it eventually pushes it way slightly under the wafer and it's a common problem. She told me to cut my flange a few millimeters larger that sometimes helps, along with some lubricant. It can also be exaggerated by the vacuum effect bags with filters can have....when my stoma is active and move output the filter pushes a small bits of air out at the same time to compensate causing the bag to suck closer to the stoma and not allowing the output to drop properly.

So now I have some new tips to try which I'm super happy with because that completely makes sense to me.

My stoma is still settling out I'm only 3 weeks post-op so I'm not going to try any other products yet but looking forward to it as this convatec 2 piece is a tad higher profile due to its design and I'm curious on other options.

I used the Convatec two piece moldable with accordion flange.  It smells after a couple of day for me also (ileostomy).  If I'd rub my hand around the flange, I could smell output on my hand.  I couldn't find any leaks.  Thanks for the info about this.

I use both M9 drops and Devrom capsules which I get from Amazon. My ostomy nurse suggested these. They help address bacterial producing odors from inside. Between the two no one ever knows when I've used the restroom to empty my pouch.

Does it work to put a Devrom in the ostomy bag? Instead of ingesting it? I already take a lot of pills. Would the chemistry be similar, does anyone know?

Very grateful to have found this post! I am using a 2 piece Hollister system and have had no leaks since I started with it about a month ago. But yesterday I kept noticing that faint scent. I have had very liquidy output the last few days and not matter how I try to keep the seal at the bottom clean, it seems the liquid seeps down into it after it is closed, so maybe that is it. I rinse the seal very thoroughly and sometimes even use a drop of soap to clean it as well as water. It works mostly, but I guess it is not 100% effective. I didn't get the scent issue until after 3 or 4 days of changing the wafer.

Hi Lil, It’s great to hear you have found a system that is leak free for you. Yes it could be a build up after emptying for 3/4 days but I always feel that we can get fixed on how long we can wear the bag for. Ok very frequent changes will cause skin issue.but a new bag a little sooner rather than wait for a problem gives us the chance for better skin care which is the holy grail for an ostomate. I feel like I am telling you off😂 please don’t take it that way 👍

Hi Lil,

Have you tried using M9 from Holister? It really works wonders. I've been using it for a while, and it really works well at eliminating odors.
