Home and well now, but what a miserable week:

I stopped having much output  Thursday the 1st of July. Having a day or two without output is really not that unusual for me, but by Sunday the 4th, at waking up, I couldn't take the pressure anymore.

Heading to the medicine cabinet, I drank a bottle of magnesium citrate  with the usual water chaser and waited. And waited, and waited. With no relief in site, my bride drove me to the emergency room.

They stick me in a CT scanner, and just as it fires up, I FILL my empty bag, the pain is gone and I'm unplugged.

Blood tests found however, that I had picked up a huge fungal infection. The CT showed lots of inflammation of what's left of my large bowel, enough that one surgeon wanted to cut it all out! (The infection it turns out, came from our hot tub!)

3 days of IV antibiotics brought my white count down to where they could send me home, with another week of 2 different antibiotics by mouth.

I did not eat the 3 days and 2 night while in hospital, until the last 4 hours where I had a couple of Ensure.

The next morning, I got up and mowed 3 lawns. Riding on my tractor dislodged the rest of the clog and I can now finally eat regular meals again.

The unexpected infection aside: My next bowel obstruction, I'm just going to drink my mag/cit and get on my tractor for an hour!

Of note: while I was stuck in hospital, hurricane Elsa went right by the farm. I left my bride and adult autistic son alone to baton down the farm, and I felt helpless not being home to do  that! Thankfully, a neighbor from church came by and put up my storm shutters for me!

Wow!  My heart goes out to you and your family.  I'm glad everything "came out" okay and that you are back home.

@jattzl Thanks, it was a bumpy ride for the family but they were thankfully uninjured.

Good golly, what an ordeal!  Wishing you a fast recovery from the infection. Glad your wife and son were all right during the storm, also.

GoatHerder,

I have had several bouts with bowel obstructions and concerned about the advice you give about taking magnesium citrate, a powerful laxative to open a possible blockage. In all of the material I read what to do if you suspect a( blockage/bowel obstruction taking a laxative is not recommended (see Eric's Bowel Obstruction guide). As you mentioned your blockage was due to an infection which is not the usual cause of a blockage such as adhesions.

@fred Just following my own doctor's advice. It was my first serious one, and in the past a gentle laxative has worked well. This time it didn't. As with anything, do what your doctor says, not Dr. Google!

interesting GH. I've heard of respiratory inflection from hot tubs.  what do they assume was pathway for infection?  I consider the 1 piece Sensura close to a hermetic seal.
