Has anyone had experience with gaining or losing weight and how that might affect the way appliances fit? I have finally reached a somewhat stable point with my ostomy and all things related. I am now on a weight-loss journey (using Weight Watchers (WW) and have lost 16 + pounds) and wonder if my appliance needs might change. Have been using Coloplast Sen Sura Mio 2 piece deep convex product which has been the best for me. I'm just wondering if I can expect to have to make changes as I continue to lose weight. So far, so good but another 25 pounds to go. Any input would be helpful! Thanks.

Well done 👍. I.always feel that being lighter helps with wearing an appliance. Yes you may need some adjusting say if there’s some lose skin or a fold. But if the weightloss is slow skin should snap back having a good look at the wafer when removing helps to give an idea of weak points.

Congrats!

I agree with John. I find it's easier to manage my appliance when I weigh less.

Be more mindful of how your appliance bends when you bend at the stomach as you lose more weight. You may need to adjust things as you lose more weight, but it should happen gradually enough that you won't be suddenly surprised.

Good luck!

shortnsweet ... I'm sorry I'm a little late to the forum here. About 5 years ago I gained about 45 pounds in less then 6 weeks.  It turned out I was not only Type 2 Diabetic but also my Thyroid Gland had decided to take a very quick & heavy nap!  The Diabetes got under control by eating the right foods and I have not tested positive since.  But apparently the Thyroid Gland issues are here to stay and I will always be on medication for the Hypothyroidism.

I was very concerned about what this weight would do to my appliance fitting as well as it always did.  My tummy had gained a nice  band of fat and  *around my stoma* was what looked like a small mound of fat the size of a half a grapefruit more then the rest of my tummy.   By getting the Type 2  Diabetes quickly under control and the Hypothyroidism with the help the Thyroid medication,  the weight I gained went off slowly taking the fat around my tummy and my  Stoma with it.  Yay me!! lol!  Though there was a bit of stretched skin It seems I didn't need to worry about how my appliance fit as even that shrunk back to where it had been.

I wear a Hollister one piece & now my tummy being back to the way its always been still fits just right.   During that time my stoma changed shaped several times affecting leaks.   Now for the last 3 years my stoma is shaped in a down facing Capital  D shape.

Good luck with your weight loss!

I ended up loosing 30 lbs within 4 weeks of my surgery (from 230-200 lbs) which I needed to because of my bad knees. I’m track supervisor for a shortline railway (well on disability atm). I did notice the weight loss and settling of my stoma made for many failed appliances. Only after my weight loss and stoma shrunk to its average size was able to see some stability
