Morning All, Yesterday my wife had a check up at one of our Belfast hospitals, Its where she had surgery earlier this year. The care by staff no matter what job they do is outstanding, every inch of the building is spotless. but as I watched people coming and going its clear their is one problem hospitals can,t control. People not washing their hands, I was at the loo twice while we where their and the majority of those who used the bathroom left without washing their hands. It don,t take brains for any one not to know the harm they can do. even along the corridors their are hand pumps with spray and we made sure as we left to use one. is it any wonder when we see on here how many of the ostomates have suffered from infection. ileostomy 31st August 1994 for Crohns I hate that as well , I even hate having to open doors because of that , so I always have a few clean tissues that I use to open doors , I would love to say in a loud voice , YOU FORGOT TO WASH YOUR HANDS but I never have the nerve ,Β at least the hospital itself is clean , I was in a ward in St James in Dublin and the toilets were only checked twice a day and they were manky ,Β I think the problem lies down our way anyway with the fact that all the cleaning is done by contractors , I worked in a hospital when I was young and each ward had their own cleaning staff and the hospital was patrolled by nuns who were constantly checking for dirt (they wore white gloves and used to run them over surfaces to check for dirt) ,Β there is a lot of criticism of nuns nowadays but they really knew how to run a hospital .Β Yep here in the North it was Matron and they made sure every thing was taken care of, even the doctors dared not cross them ileostomy 31st August 1994 for Crohns yes and now instead they have all sorts of managers doing the joy that one matron and maybe one assistant used to do . I have spent there last 2 weeks in hospital. My doc said the way I got c-diff was probably from an idiot non-hand washer!!!Β Β That's a testament to what you guys just said!! At Holy Cow here in Spokane they take extra precautions.Β If you get c-diff while you are here, you get out of quarantine as soon as you test clear of it.Β If you come in with it, like I did,Β you stay in quarantine until you leave. The doc said was because the strain I had could have morphed and if the 2 got together it could make moe changes.Β Β Here the phrase they use is "Gel In, Gel Out".Β If you have c-diff they not only use the sanitizer gel, but, they have to wash with hot soapy water too!!! Severe rheumatoid arthritis, spondoloarthropy, polymyalgia rhumatica, type 1 diabetic, IBS and finally, emergency diverticulitis surgery, colon removed Stella born Jan. 27, 2017. 6 bouts of c-diff, failed fecal transplant. Complete colonectomy and ileostomy July 30, 2018. ENOUGH!! Thats also the problem with medical insurance. To many "suits" running the insurance instead of doctors. Complete colonectomy and ileostomy July 30, 2018. ENOUGH!! I likely got it at work as it's something a few of our folks have. We encourage hand washing at any time when hands are visibly soiled and in general, hand sanitizer when hands are not visibly soiled. Crohn's Colitis, Ilieostomy, Proctocolectomy November 2017 And, just to complicate things. Our hospital ( and I assume others) has a big sign by the hand sanitizerΒ dispensers ( Purell) that areΒ everywhereΒ in the hospital that it doesn't kill C.Diff. Ah well.. I think hand washing is the answer .. if only more people did it!As you all have mentioned. Seems like a no brainer, but some people have none I guess. Onset of severe Ulcerative Colitus Oct.2012. Subtotal colectomy with illiostomy July 2015; Peristomal hernia repair ( Sugarbaker, mesh, laparoscopic) May 2017. True! I saw a good T shirt: Stupidity Kills, but not fast enough. Soap and hot water are wonderful things. Onset of severe Ulcerative Colitus Oct.2012. Complete colonectomy and ileostomy July 30, 2018. ENOUGH!! Gag me It drives me crazy how nasty some people are .Β When I was in the hospital had a tree port pic line in my neck . I had to remind some nurses they had to wipe port with alcohol before using . One time one nurse came at me with no gloves on to give med in my port . We must stay vigilant about our care .Β We sure do. All in all, we are the only ones who will really care for us. It should be required before the door to the bathroom opens up again!Β Just your friendly neighborhood ostomate. I'm at a conference full of doctors and I've seen several people not washing their hands after using the bathroom!
