Hi every one. I was just given an American Doll to use as my model when I make clothes for my granddaughter's dolls. She is used and slightly abused. She has a hole in her tummy  However, it is in the same area as an ileostomy, and I was thinking of turning her into an ostomy doll. Any suggestions as to what I could use for a stoma?

Thanks in advance!

Stella

Hi Stella,

What a neat idea!!  Maybe you could cut the end off of a balloon and attach it so the part you blow into is sticking out of the tummy. I’m not sure how big the dolls are but you could probably find an appropriate sized balloon.

A half-dome red button with a shank - I just googled this and saw a lot of these, in different sizes/ A couple looked like roses or rosebuds.

Hi Linda,

Actually, I was considering using a shank button. So thanks for the suggestion.

@squeakyandliza

Thank you as well! BTW, American Girl Dolls are about 18" tall.

@sjlovestosing... Nice! Good for you!!! ,I have a Stoma doll from Hollister for my very curious granddaughter always checking to see why I rattle then giving  me a very interesting concerned look!! Ugh!  But the Stoma looks like it was made from a small hair scrunchy,  a little stuffed for pouf,  then stitched to the tummy.

At a hardware store you can find some kind of thick soft clear plastic to stitch  or warm hot glue sides together a pouch with then use velcro to attach it to the tummy for the pouch then it can be changed too.

The hair on the soft doll they sent me is none less then horrid! Its one single line of wool across the top of the hair line sewed into the seam. I've been making hair to add to it only in pink then I'll hand stitch it on. Even just pinned on it looks a million times better!!!  I'll be tacking that one row of brown hair (wool) down to look like bangs.

I'll have a look & get back to you incase your interested ... but I'm pretty sure  I saw some patterns for 18" doll clothing somewhere recently.

Hi all,

I've been working on my doll and came up with an idea that seems to work. I took some red ribbon and wound it tightly into a sort of rosette, then added glue to stiffen it. Since the material was fraying around the hole, I glued it in place. This doll is more or less a model for me so I can sew clothes for my granddaughter's dolls, so I think my fix will be ok. It's not a doll you can easily wash - only spot clean. I have also made up a bag cover, but haven't gotten it attached yet. I plan on using circular velcro and will punch out the center to go around the stoma.

Thanks for everyone's input!!!

Stella

@sjlovestosing...Very nice Stella ! The stoma looks very similar to the stoma doll I have.  I can't figure out how to post pictures here yet, lol!  If you don't mind, please post pics of the clothes you make for her. I'd love to see them. Our little Gwen is starting to play with a doll  at home ( in my basement suite, lol, I feel so spoiled having her this close)  so I've been hunting clothing patterns for Dolls as well.

Stella, that is just adorable! And the sweet little pouch - this is such a great idea. How lucky she is to have found you!

Linda, I had not heard of those ostomy dolls and will have to look them up. Was the hair in a ponytail? I really dislike when the poor doll has that weird (and cheap) fringe thing.

I have been sewing grocery/tote bags lately, first for a group of children who are doing some outdoor and music activities (to hold their recorders and various stuff) and now because in our city there will soon be a sort of ban on plastic bags. They are easy, and take just a half-yard of fabric. I have begun experimenting with using scraps pieced together, but that takes more time

@llholiday ...Linda, yes, its that awful fringe for hair on the Hollister Stoma Doll. Honestly I had never seen it before so was very surprised by it! Just straight across the top seam, I mean whats that about really?  My first opinion was who in the world thought this was even okay!?  No imagination!  The rest of the doll is pretty good though.  Don't get me get wrong,  I appreciate the doll but...!  I'll see if my son can take a few min. & help me post a before & after picture.  In one high school school, sewing class we made a Raggedy Anne Doll & I remembered how we made a head full of hair so I'm doing very similar only longer hair for this stoma doll so I  can make short braids. With kids having there hair coloured in candy colours these days I thought I'd make the hair pink...I also don't have brown wool either & am not up to a 3 hour trip/outing to accomplish brown hair! ...lol!

Good for you making cloth bags! Its very common to see quilted looking ones on instagram in the quilting department. I've been reusing the red mesh bags Onions come in for my vegetables when grocery shopping. I open the staple from one end & run a cord of macrame wool through it for the tie. They're tough things for the use I've given them over the years.

Also way back in the early 80's I made a big whack of cloth bags from on sale fabric in Christmas theme patterns for Christmas gifts.  I'm still using them every Christmas. I made several sizes to hold the variety of gifts we were giving that 1st year in the family.  Then the following year  I made a bunch more for gift giving to friends & extended family  that they could keep & the response was good so I just kept it up over the years. We draw names for gift giving in my family as there's 12 adults, so its much more affordable & still fun.

Ugh! I remember my Dad burning a whole bunch of paper wrap every year in our fire place & even as a child I was very aware of the cost & the waste going to ashes,  so, this is something I do for the environment  & our wallets! Lol!

@dlkfiretruck Linda, I looked at those Hollister ostomy dolls and I think they look like a great and sturdy toy for younger children (but the hair - gee whiz!) Stella’s modified American Girl doll would be so enjoyable for a child who wants to dress up a doll and change the outfits (or a person like me, not that I need more stuff in my house).  I wish the American Girl company also made boy dolls. That 18-inch is such a good size.

Linda, American Dolls do make boy dolls. Just go on to their website. Just click on the link below for an example.

Linda, if you want to find patterns for clothes for an 18" doll, they have them at pixiefaire.com. Some of the patterns are free, while others are sold.

PS: There is a person in the UK who makes baby dolls with stomas and bags. The stomas look a little more adult size, but it's a nice idea.
