i have had my stoma for 15 months and have been using the Hollister 2-piece since receiving the starter kit at the hospital. Four times this has happened, that the coupling either came apart on  its own or stool leaked past the coupling, pooling onto the outside of the bag. Has this happened to anyone else? I try to be really careful to make sure the thing is snapped together securely. I get this very annoying pancaking -  could the pancaking, or my (gently) pushing the stool down into the bag, weaken the coupling?

I use a one piece and have forgotten to roll up the velcro closure and even forgot to close the osto ez vent! Not a pretty sight! I hope you can solve the issue. ;)

Hi LLNorth,

I have always used the Hollister 2 piece ( about 4 years now). I have never had it uncouple. Are you sure its 'clicking' into place when you attach the bag to the wafer. Other than that ???

I also gently push the output down into the bottom of the bag. Especially when I am sitting or lying down. That action really shouldn't make the bag uncouple. Once it is the lower part of the bag, it had much less effect on the wafer area.

Pancaking is a problem and causes leaking but I have been able to pretty much eliminate it by not eating certain things .. nuts or dry cracker like things late in the day a main culprit. Drink lots of fluids. I also eat very little after 2 PM.

Seems to make a difference although I know we are all different.

Try keeping a log...what you eat, when you eat it and what happens.

Good luck.

Hi ya, Am a Convatec 2 peice user. Have to say when it’s in place it’s a very good seal. There has been an odd time where it’s leaked for the bottom after changing as I have just not pushed it in right. I can’t see pancaking the cause. Could it be a change in body shape as you have been back to better health. Also I have to add not saying you have got fat just healthier 😃

John, haha, I didn’t think you were telling me I have gotten fat  ☺️ - I am actually about 5-6 pounds less than before my surgery, hope to stay right around this mark! So, no real body shape changes and I am going to take more care to really make sure this coupling is snapped completely, all around. And to keep an eye on it.

@dona

Thanks, Dona, I have not kept a food diary but maybe I will start. This pancaking is so annoying!

the coupling either came apart on  its own or stool leaked past the coupling

If it only happened once, I'd say it was bad luck, but four times means something is going on. These couplings are so strong that if you try to tug your appliance off (don't recommend this!)  you will likely tear your skin.

A few things come to mind :

  • Double check that the coupling is snapped 100%. You an gently tug on the bag outwards to test.
  • If you are using an accessory belt, make sure it's not pulling on the side tabs too much as this will cause the coupling to unsnap. If you are not using an accessory belt, you may want to try using one to see if it helps to keep your bag more secure.
  • If you are using any lubricating products or if you place oil in the coupling (i.e. To help rotate your appliance)  discontinue using them and see if it helps.
  • Inspect both the bag and wafer couplings before use and check to make sure there aren't any kinks in them.
  • Double check to make sure that the size of the bag and wafer are designed to work for one another (i.e. They are the same size). I've accidently used two different sizes and while it seems to "fit"  the coupling does not hold.
  • Its possible that bending creates a fold that pushes the coupling to unsnap. It may be worth experimenting with getting samples of the next size up/down of your current appliance.
  • If you are using a blow drier or heat source on your wafer before applying it, discontinue doing that to see if it helps. It's possible that the heat is warping the coupling.

Good luck! If you do end up identifying the cause, I'd love it if you could let us know.

Thanks, Eric. So, two times in the last year the coupling just separated - I was at home, thank goodness.  The other two times I thought I could smell something and when I checked there was a small amount of output oozing out of the top of the coupling, from between the two pieces, and pooling onto the bag. I am really wondering if the pancaking had something to do this, that it somehow pushed its way into the coupling seal.  .... The first time this happened, when the coupling separated, I had noticed a slight bend in one of the pieces but used it anyway (I won’t do that again!) .... I have noticed the oozing seemed to only happen at the top of the coupling - could it be from bending, I wonder; thank you again Eric for the list and I am going to be very vigilant for sure!

Many thanks for the suggestions, Eric. I am working on them, and am now extra careful not to let the Adapt drip into the seal at all when I change. And I have been really checking to make sure I have the ring securely and completely snapped (it is certainly possible that I had become a little over-confident and careless!) I do bend a lot, which does weaken the adhesive; when I see that I add a little piece of tape. Here is another theory - pancaking is an almost chronic annoyance for me, and I wonder if burping the appliance has allowed an occasional small amount of output into the snap ring. So that is another thing I will watch for, and might stop burping it at all. LL

This can certainly be a potential cause, although I have never run into problem myself. If you do burp your appliance, make sure you are standing upright and only do so if there is no stool around the part of the flange you plan to open.
