@Adrian Fulcher

Hi Adrian, that's a neat "recipe"! How much do you spray at a time and do you find that the vinegar causes your skin to burn at all or is it too diluted to be a problem?

Peptol bsimol taken right after eating something that might cause odors or soon after or even before, will bind the odor molecules and neutralize them. I only use it at night right before bed so that I mthe morning. It won't be as bad when changing pouch. The only other time I will use, is before going out or to family gatherings. That coupled with "Stop Odor Plus" (just a few drops in pouch- 8 does the trick) help to almost entirely eliminate most odor. I don't worry about odor so much at home, but do like waking up and not having to deal with the smell from hell inmthe mornings.

I but the generic bismuth liquid (I found the tablets don't work as well) which is like almost 1/2 the price of peptic bismol and works just as well. If I eat things like,onions, or fish or something smelly, I will take some right away before eating.

It doesn't work on all odors, but on most I would say. You may need more than the recommended dose depending o. Strength of food odor, or,how muchmof,themfood,much of,, eat. I just take a,good swig right from bottle. It supposedly be ds with certain odors, and I can attest that it works pretty well. Not perfect, but it really cuts down the odor.

One thing you can do to prevent a deodorizing liquid from contacting stoma is to slightly saturate a small piece of toilet paper with the liquid, and drop it in pouch. It will stay at bottom of pouch away fro. The osotmy

Great idea, bob, and I am going to try that.  I drop an antacid tablet or two (or tic-tacs) into the pouch sometimes, along with the M9drops, if I am worried about odor, as an added insurance if I am going to be somewhere sitting close to others. The tabets/tictacs stay in the bottom, and they dissolve, of course.

Such interesting remedies here! As a new ostomate 12 plus yrs ago I didn't know about M9 or the Osto EZ Vents  until VO, I find it works fabulously.   For myself & foods I enjoy, lol, I needed more drops the suggested on bottle so I use about 18 drops mostly counting it out to kill odours & it works great.   If I'm not mistaking, I think it even neutralizes Gas odours to a  greater degree.  Anyone else find this??

I believe because our guts have less time to process foods like thru a "normal length" intestinal system, that the time in our shorter gut is why output is more offensive. Plus its practically in our faces when we empty which really makes us aware of the smell.

Before M9 my son located a recipe on line using 3% grade Hydrogen Peroxide, (HP). I would use a plastic one gallon milk jug & add  1 1/2 bottles of HP, not the sauce, lol  & then about a 1/4 of Johnsons baby hair &  body  shampoo then a gallon of pre-  boiled water. I put shampo in last to avoid too many bubbles then diluted all by swishing around the jug then placed some in a refilable bottle. I used an old washed out bottle of expired stoma powder, use a funnel. Lol! Since I've been able to purchase M9 I get about a month from a bottle of M9  counting the drops into my pouch.

I've been keeping some empty M9 bottles for this purpose as the price of  M9 keeps climbing I may well need jeed to go back to this process.  If I do I may add some of the diluted white vinegar as well if its COMPATIBLE to HP, or switch out the HP. Well see I guess,   but I'll be sure  & keep you in the loop if I do.

Could some of you share what you  pay for a bottle of M9  & where you purchase it from. My price is creeping closer to 30 bucks a bottle thru a medical supply company that delivers to home, orders over I think  60$ ...are free delivery.   This is still better then the  $52.00 dollars my pharmacist was charging me for 1 bottle the same product! Ugh!!!! Lol, I wanted to cry every time I paid for that liquid gold!

I'm widowed & in Canada on a very tight budget so any ideas are helpful. M9 is so handy & works so much better than anything I've tried. If your interested in viewing the sight I purchase my M9 & other needs  from, just say it,  I'd love to share. Thank you in advance .

Hi all,

I have my supplies from Coloplast Charter and after one of their recent 'stoma checks' i was advised that i can use peppermint or lavender oils inside my pouch to tackle odour when emptying/changing.
Ive had my ileostomy 3 yrs and i've not tried this method until now. I have used in-pouch sprays, gels before etc, but none of those have helped, so i figured oils, mints etc would also be ineffective.

But to my astonishment i have placed 3 to 5 drops of peppermint oil in each empty/change and like a miracle in the last 24 hours - no foul, awful, rotting garbage smell - just minty freshness.   I'm totally amazed that after 3 yrs of being embarassed of leaving a stink behind me that my family members do not need to peg their noses when going in the bathroom.

I do not know if this is just a fluke, but i can honestly say that so far it seems to be totally neutralising the content odour.

I was also told i can place orange peel in the pouch (but this idea makes me think of a human compost bin) so its sort of put me off trying this one.

My concern is, that reading this forum i find that the stoma being a living organism should not have certain things placed INSIDE the pouch.  So as the Coloplast Charter agent recommends essential oils - i'm wanting to know is this safe?

@et1 I've used essential oil in my bag to test, and I didn't have a positive experience. I don't recall if it was lavender or something else, but my output ended up smelling "skunky", so I stopped using it.

I was comfortable using it as I never got the oil on my stoma, nor did my stoma come in contact with it as it tended to stay towards the bottom of the bag (closer to the outlet).

Considering that Coloplast Charter said you could use it, I'd be more comfortable recommending it.

Just to ease your mind, using essential oil in an ostomy bag was also studied with positive results! See -> https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31476706/

I tried the peroxide for a few days and it did cut the odor but gave out a strange smell. The other thing is I had a bad taste in my mouth. I do rinse so I think it was coming in contact with my stoma and therefore why I tasted it so I just but the bullet and now I just order the M9 and pay the price. It’s  $27 a bottle from expressmed.com here in the US and then of course there is shipping but you earn points and can get money back on purchases.

I tried Hollister lubricant and deodorant and add peroxide then I spread it around the bag. It works really well. Ladies watch out for your finger nails. I managed to rip a few holes in my skin barrier when I was pressing the edge around my stoma so I am more careful now.

I love Na' Scent. My ostomy RN recommended it and it completely eliminates odors. It's on back order right now and I am very sad. I'll have to try other things. Does anyone know what is in it? All these products are so expensive but my family is so sensitive to odors and I am unwilling to give up the foods I love. Na' Scent completely eliminates the smell so I hope the back order is temporary. There are a lot of scalpers right selling it for enormous,ridiculous prices.

You can often get clues from the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet), but the magic ingredients are usually kept a trade secret.

I find the Hollister M9 to be very effective, and that might be easier for you to get right now.

Susan ... Welcome to VO!! I too use M9 and I find it very affective. When I first had an ostomy in 2009, I hardly left the house other then to walk my 3 dogs. I had a huge issue with believing I strank.  At the time there was a lot going on in my family and the cost of M9 was just something I couldn't afford, so I tried making my own liquid deodorant for several months.   If I remember right it worked pretty good.  My son found a recipe online for me.  Now, I use the M9 but its getting so much more expensive.  With 3 dogs and then my ostomy, I realized one day that dogs stiff a babies bottom for odor and not one of my dogs had ever bothered smelling me where my pouch was unless I had a leak and didn't realize it.

Anyways, When I bought the M9 I was amazed at how it worked.  I have a very active Ileostomy and one BIG  bottle of M9 lasts me a month,   but I count out the drops going into my pouch. I find 20 drops is perfect for my output odor . I saved the bottle I have from an expired Ostomy Powder, washed it out & then put M9 into that. It gives me better control of drops going in verses from the big M9 bottle, which I found I go thru too quickly relying on the drop size from the spout on the M9 bottle. I last begrudgingly paid  $43.00 per bottle thru a pharmacutical company that delivers straight to my door within 2 days,  I now bite the bullet and buy 4 to 6 bottles at a time.  Google around as prices vary.  I've seen the M9 listed as high as over 50 dollars, so be careful. I also always read comments from customers before I ordered from the company I use now.

Are you a fairly new Ostomate? I hope this helps with a decision if you need to buy a bottle of M9 to get you thru.  Also again, depending on your supplier, Coloplast will send you a small free bottle of M9 to try.

@dlkfiretruck hello,

Do you remember that recipe you were using prior to the M9? I used to use it but im retired and on a fixed income at the moment so have been using  nothing.

When I used to use the M9 I would buy travel size shampoo containers that i got from the drug store.  The small ones and had a flip top that I would pour some M9 into for my work  bathroom bag.. it was very convenient and small sized to make more room in my bag. I used to use those zippered lunch bag type lunch bags and worked perfectly to carry the M9, a water bottle, wipes in a baggie and some toilet paper.
