I'm curious to know which ostomy deodorants you've tried and which ones you've found to work best (please note whether you have an ileostomy or colostomy).

This probably isn't helpful..but I don't use any. Odor isn't  problem ( at least to me Ha Ha..).

I don't really have leaks anymore ( after nearly two years of finding out what works for me).

Question?? Is that amount of time typical for getting the right system? Do you have any ideas about that? Thanks.

That is a long time, but there are so many options and not all will work for everyone. I know some people who still haven't found a system that works reliably for them after many years.

Also keep mind that our skin and bodies are always changing. What's been working for years may all of a sudden stop working reliably and we need to find a better system.

Yes, the first problem I had was that after surgery, the stoma shrinks!  My body type is O.K. pretty flat stomach slim to normal weight, but it seemed  like some of the rings ( Hollister) didn't stick. Then my stoma started going flush with my body occasionally and I went to convex wafers ( after speaking to my stoma nurse). All good now.

Back on topic...I should mention that I have an illiostomy so the oder problem might be different than for some. I don't know. ???

Also I wanted to say ,so as  not to scare people just starting out, that I didn't have leaks for the whole two years. Its like Eric said. Things change and you have to rethink it. Most of the time things were just fine and I was very happy with the whole deal. Its great that there are so many options to try.

Hi , I have tried a few deodorants ,  Coloplast Brava Lubricating Ostomy Pouch Deodorant , just a drop deodorant , Na'Scent Ostomy Pouch Deodorant and peppermint essential oil

The coloplast whilst having a nice scent did nothing as far as I could see ,

just a drop which became available in Ireland recently is quite effective (esp the stronger version),

na scent was the best of the lot but works out too expensive for me and its not available for free like most of my medication and takes a few weeks to arrive from the UK or USA , peppermint essential oil works well and is available everywhere (use at your own risk but I have had no reaction on my skin while I was using it ),

I have an ostomy and the output can be fairly liquid(trio pearls help with this and the odour as well)  and I use coloplast 2 piece system , the filter is useless , even at the start and if gas is released even when fresh install it is nasty , the solution for me is to use the included stickers from the start and block the filter up .

I think you will always have some odour when you are emptying and changing no matter what you use , I find burping the bag and emptying every few hours helps a lot ,

When I do empty my bag at home I always rinse with water until it runs clean and I think in my own mind anyway that this helps .

PS as far as leaks go I have not had a leak in about 3 months , I put this down to sites like this , crohnsforums  and a lot of helpful users on youtube , these sites have kept me sane and peoples sense of humour help most of all .

I tried this years ago and didn't have a good experience, but I'll be trying it again at some point to see if my experience changes.

I just recently started using Hollister's M-9 Odor Eliminator. I love it, I had some in some spray bottles that the hospital had put in with my supplies when I was released. Previous to the M-9 I had been using the Coloplast Brava Lubricating Deodorant. I liked the way it smelled but I really could see no difference using it.  Used the Na'Scent as well for a bit but I wasn't overly impressed. It would probably be my second choice if i had to pick one. I don't have a bad odor problem but when I have eaten something that bothers me I have really bad gas, the M-9 seems to take care of the odor the best.

Devco tabs (charcoal) are the best I've used. Byrum has them, but Liberator doesn't. No fancy smell but no odor at all which is the idea, after all. I use 2 tabs each time for my mostly liquid output. Satellite mints work also. Peppermint is ok but I prefer the green ones.

I will have to give the Devco tabs a try, I use Byram so I should be able to get them.

Kind of off topic but I just ordered some samples from a company (Ostomy Super San) Has anyone tried their pouches? They have a built in irrigation set up, looks kind of interesting. This is what it says on their website.

*Built-in Irrigation System

washes the inside of osotmy pouch while gently cleansing the stoma without removal of the pouch.

I have tried the Na Scent and find it works but as Tony said it is expensive to use. I have started to use Tic Tacs (the breath mints) I put two in my bag after I have emptied and cleaned it with water. I'm finding it works just fine. I don't know if Tic Tacs are available in the U.K. but I buy a package of them at the Dollar Store for .82 cents and by rough count it looks like there are about fifty of them in a package. If you find it doesn't work for you, you can always take them as a breath mint so all would not be lost.

I've actually come up with a way of doing this with pretty much any ostomy bag ? I'll have a video about it in the near future (it's already recorded).

Never thought about that Tony, good one. I can't burp my bag as I use a two piece convex Coloplast click appliance. So I have to burp it through the bottom closure,.

Oh that sounds great Eric can't wait to see your way of doing it. I like the sound of the Ostomy Super San built in irrigation system and look forward to your review of it as well.

Enjoy the rest of the long week end.

I burp from the bottom closure as well , I find it the safer option .

I struggled with the odor issue and tried pretty much everything with no real success. Then I tried GEL PLUS. It works great!  I think I saw it on a review by Eric. Big relief for me. Ileostomy. I also flush my bag after emptying. I use a spray system attached to my toilet.

I have only tried the M9 and the coloplast scented lubricating liquid.  I didn't find the M9 did much and the the coloplast is 50/50. Im going to give the tic tacs a try!
