Let's talk about stoma caps! Have you used them? Have they worked?

[caption id="attachment_63099" align="aligncenter" width="1024"]Stoma cap collection As you can see, there are quite a few stoma caps available from various manufacturers.[/caption]

Hi Eric, I have only ever tried them out once. I received one in a sample order which was by convatec. it fitted on the wafer just like the bag. For me my stoma decided it was some sort of challenge to see how fast he could fill it  I do see how they can play a part for some folk and the more options available to help live normal the better.

This might work well for intimate moments . As long as  its a  Quicky. But seriously it would work . 😈😈😈

Haha. Depending on how unpredictable your stoma is, it might have to be a very quick quicky! 😂😂😂

I have tried most of the caps and have not found them to be waterproof (even covering filter, etc) and been disappointed in the odor control in the filters.
I irrigate my colostomy and get several days without output but have settled on the coloplast sensura mio mini bag—a little bigger than I’d like but very waterproof and superior filter for odor control

I use them in the shower when I know it's time to change the bag after the shower. Lasts for the 15 minutes or so and I don't have to work around the bag. And it gives me 15 minutes of freedom!

I dry the area after my shower then apply the cap. Then I finish drying and wear it while I blow dry my hair or do other after shower stuff so I don't worry about any leaking before I get to putting on a new pouch. It made a huge difference in my piece of mind after my shower as enjoying my showers was something I really missed. I could finally relax. I have used them from the beginning.

What brand of stoma caps are you currently using and have you used any others?

I cut out the ring from an old bag and use a sandwich bag over the ring ,snap together and it's waterproof. I also use them when I'm home alone.

I've been irrigating for the last 16+ years -- some of your readers might want to check out Ampatch products. They are sort of like a large nicotine patch. Next best thing to no ostomy at all. Only made in the USA as far as I know, not all Canadian suppliers will order for you. Highly recommend for irrigated colostomies.
Great site, BTW.

Maybe put the “who can use this” info at the BEGINNING of the article. I was interested and reading through it and excited only to THEN find out I’m not an eligible ostomate to use these.

Hi Joe,

I really appreciate your feedback and apologies for wasting your time with this article.

Because it wouldn't make much sense to say who can use certain products before knowing how they work and when they would be appropriate to use, I felt it was better to explain these products first. This format may not work for everyone, but I felt it was best to explain things and let the user decide if these products might be appropriate for them.

Regards,

Eric

Great article Eric. Your right,  what works for one does not always work for another. This is where I find your videos and articles so very helpful. It comes down to a matter of Trial and Error all around. Thank  you so very much for all the  helpful and clear information. I found out thru you, when I first joined, after 8 years of having an ostomy,  that I could ask for samples, it made trying products so much easier. It even gave me a greater sense of freedom and control.  Keep up the great work.

I thought the cap was specificaly for intimate times. But I am reading on here only if it is a quickly. That dies not sound like they would work for swimming or intimate moments. I am disappointed to hear this. Can you give me better advice regarding this cap issue?
Are some better than others n if so woukd you please tell me?? Which brand I should experment with for these 2 issues please. Thank you.

Hi Debra,

Much of the problem here is that caps are not going to be appropriate for active stomas and stomas that output frequently (i.e. ileosotmies).

Caps work best when someone has a colostomy, and ideally, irrigates. In this scenario, the stoma would be quite dormant for many hours (or even days), so a large bag isn't necessary. So for those people, caps can make a lot of sense.

If you fit in the above use case, then it's a matter of finding which cap works best for you. I suggest starting with a brand you already use for your main appliance, and then go from there. Ideally, if you use a two-piece system, you can remove your large bag and swap it for the cap without needing to remove your wafer.

I hope that helps.
