Hi

Looking for some advice or tips .

I used the coloplast brava protective ring with a 1 piece pouch for almost a year since my surgery. At the beginning I could use it for 3 or 4 days. I used 2.5 mm thick, about 2 months ago found out that it wore out around 2 days. Then I changed to 4.2 mm thick, sometimes I could use for 2 days. But lately , just this week, only 1 day. Continuously 3 days I need to replace everyday because the output went down to the base of the ring and went on my skin. So much that seems no output went into the bag.  This happened at night time. I usually sleep on my back.

Thanks

Hi Stella. It may not be the ring. Have you measured the stoma recently. Change in body shape, diet, exercise and medication can effect output. Even products while washing can have an effect. It can be frustrating but leaks all have a reason and solution 👍

I would agree with John that it may not be the ring, especially if you've tried two different thicknesses.

Has anything else changed that might affect your wear time?

hi Stella , i started off using the coloplast rings , but after some skin sensitivity problems i changed over to using the eakin seals , my output can be fairly harsh at times but i generally get 3 to four days before i need to change the baseplate, I also use trio pearls which helps a lot ,

my method is remove old base plate using eakin release spray , when all remains of previous seal is removed I use a cold water wipe on the area for a few minutes to calm things down , after drying the area thoroughly I use some stoma powder if needed ,

then I use eakin protect spray and let dry , can be hard if the volcano erupts but with practice it can be done

mould eakin seal to rough shape of stoma and put in place , apply baseplate , in my case hollister 2 piece , connect pouch and if you can lie down and place your hand , palm over the area for at least 5 minutes , the heat from your hand help with making sure everything is sticking well , 4 days later repeat , unless you feel the dreaded burning sensation which in my case means change ASAP .

5 Years in with my ostome  and so far only 2 bad leaks , one in bed and one whilst driving which was not a bad one

Thanks John, Eric and Tony

Leak again this morning. The same, go under the protective ring at night.

No other changes that I can remember. I changed to eat more vegetable few months ago, but there were few months no change unitl lately, especially this week. I do eat more yogurt, could that be? (please no offend on the food that others eat). I also want to find that out, will try to change.

Thanks Tony, I may try your advice.

Hi Stella,

I use rings and I still get leaks, but it is so much worse without the ring. For me, the output always goes down the ring and is on my skin. I consider it a win when it stays there and doesn’t go under the wafer. My skin is always sore. I hope you are able to find a better solution than I have. I changed my bag 12 hours ago and now just had to change again in the bathroom stall at work this morning.  So believe me, I completely understand your frustration!

Hi Stella

If the skin under the protective ring is not really dry output especially if its become more liquid might creep under the ring.

Stoma powder and spray "Crusting technique" or using calamine lotion can help dry the skin.

Change in stoma do you now need some convexity of the bag because the surrounding skin has sunken around stoma (A moat formed) allowing seepage. Myself and Lisa discussed this awhile ago on the forum?

Hi Stella,

I use the Adapt ring with the Hollister two-piece. I actually use a little Dial foaming liquid soap to wash the area, rinse and dry well, and like Tony I will use a little stoma powder if the skin looks like it is reddening. Then I stretch the ring a little and - this may help - flatten it all around the inside (pinching it a little between thumb and forefinger), then apply. My theory is that the flattening encourages any leaking away from the getting under the ring. Like Tony, I don’t get a lot of weartime, three days is about all that I get before the output starts getting under the ring.

I also experience sticking issues with the coloplast rings.  The ones I honestly prefer and recommend are the hollister 8805 barrier rings with ceramide.  They help heal and protect the skin and stick very well.  Good luck Stella!

May I be advised further tips :

Hollister sent me samples. I'm putting on the adapt ring 8805, barrier 11204. pouch 18184. (my first time to use 2 pieces system)

May I be advised :

- is Hollister barrier match with all their pouches ? How should I choose from their site to match the barrier and the pouch.

- The pouch is not transparent. How can I tell when will be time the ring is worn out and is time to change ?

If anyone using 11204 and the pouch is transparent (or clear), please let me know the product number.

Thanks again

Hi Stella, Barrier rings can be mixed with different pouches from different companies. Choosing the size and thickness depends on the diameter of your stoma and personal needs. Also the ring can be broken shaped and moulded to what you need. Knowing when a system needs changed, For me I change on the third day. Some may say it’s a short wear time but my skin thanks me for it. The ring absorbs fluid which is what it’s meant to do. But worn to long and it will cause skin problems. Judge the wafer when changing and the skin and it will give you an idea of your ideal wear time. Also some pouches which are not clear have a viewing window under a flap. Ostomy products can seem confusing but once you find a system it’s gonna be a friend for a long time. 👍

The customer care people at Hollister are very nice and very helpful - I have called a few times with questions. My understanding is that the Hollister products in the red boxes are interchangeable.  The pouches I use have the beige fabric and I can’t see inside, but I am ok with that, and the rings are, I believer, CeraPlus, very kind to skin (my skin is most sensitive under the ring). I change about every three days, sometimes a little sooner, and my skin does well (knock on wood here!).

Thanks John & LL.

Yes, I called Hollister and they advised me how to browse their site.  On their site, scrolled down to the bottom and will find the product catalogue, very helpful.

The skin barrier and pouch can be matched by the color of the product, e.g blue skin barrier go with blue pouch, they will have the same flange size.

And, I remembered sometime before someone here looked for a transparent pouch. I like that as well. The pouch I'm going to use will be 18194 (transparent) to match skin barrier 11204.

@stella Oh, that is what I was trying to say, to stick with the same color, that is how they are color-coded to work together. My flange, pouch and ring are always in the red boxes.
