Hello I need some input about a product. I am battleing constant leaks. I have an ilio and my output is usually the consistency of tooth paste. It seems no matter what I do fecal matter will seep under my eakin barrior rings. Although eakin gives me far more protection then any other ring. I am trying different products and method of application. I was wondering if anyone has experience with Nu-Hope Barrier Caulking Strips. Also, I dont have any outstanding skin problems at this point but my Osto nurse suggested that I ues skin prep to make wafer stick better and/or extra adhesivve Hey @smarty. I always prefer to use fewer products, if possible, but that often starts with finding the right appliance first. You mentioned in another post that you are using a Coloplast convex wafer. Have you tried other brands/styles of wafer? I went through a lot of trial and error, often having leaks within 24h. When I eventually found the right appliance and technique for cleaning/prepping my skin, my wear time shot up to no fewer than 7 days. Some skin preps can work fine, but I've had manufacturers tell me not to use any skin prep with their "extended wear" products, since they say it interferes with the adhesive. I've never used adhesive, but I do recall using a "tacky" wipe at one point (didn't do much). My current skin prep includes cleaning with 70-80% isopropyl alcohol, waiting for that to evaporate, and then applying a gently heated wafer to my skin and holding it with a toilet paper tube pressing gently around my stoma. I've been using this technique for probably a few years now, and I have very consistent and reliable wear time. But as I said, it wasn't always like this, even when I was laying up different products. Just your friendly neighborhood ostomate. thanks for your input. I use the convetec wafers. Hollister doesnt agree with my skin and coloplast has the locking system which I find too difficult, but I may give them another try. My leaks arealways on one side so think my main problem is that I have a bulge, like a hernia but its not, on one side which raises one side and causes stoma to point down. I've been in the trial and error phase for over a year and have talked with numerous Osto nurses via phone or video. This is very discouraging. I have an appointment with a COLO surgeon to do a scope, so I think Im going to pull off my appliance and have him take a good look at stoma and see if surgery would help. Also do you know anything about the Nu Hope cauking strips? and coloplast has the locking system which I find too difficult, but I may give them another try. A lot of people find the Sensura Mio locking flange a little cumbersome, but Coloplast has been adding new products to their line over the years in different shapes and curvatures, so it may be worth sampling. My leaks arealways on one side so think my main problem is that I have a bulge, like a hernia but its not, on one side which raises one side and causes stoma to point down. Yes, that's entirely possible. Bulges, dips, and folds can all create a gap or even lift the wafer off the skin enough to cause a leak. I find that 1PC appliances, with their larger surface areas, can help in this case, but it's really trial and error since each body shape will dictate the need for a different approach. But I will say that using barrier rings have never helped when the leaks stem from mechanical causes (i.e. bending, twisting, too much weight on the wafer) because I often find that the adhesive holding power of a barrier ring is much less than that of a wafer. An appointment with your surgeon sounds like a good step, at least to make sure that there's nothing wrong under the skin and around the stoma. Also do you know anything about the Nu Hope cauking strips? I've never used it, personally. I can't imagine that it would be much different from other barrier strips. In that case, they could help with dips or skin folds, but may also create weaknesses under the wafer. If you can get your hand on some samples, it's always worth a shot to see if it makes a difference. Just your friendly neighborhood ostomate. I once had that problem to where I was leaking around my stoma area. I was using the convatec activelife pouch with stomahesive. Great pouch by the way. It was back when I had my hernias. What my stoma nurse did was we used a 4x4 skin barrier and made our own ring. She cut it into the size of a ring but after I was experimenting at home I found better to cut it just a bit smaller than the size of my flange barrier into a circle. I used the paper that peels from the flange as a guide to trace onto the paper on the 4x4 . Then to cut the hole in the middle i would make it the same size as the flange hole. Sometimes I played around with that and would cut a bit smaller but not too small. I found if my hole was too small that will cause output to go under the flange. So that could be an issue if your hole around your stoma is too large or too small. I had tried both Hollister and convatec 4x 4 but I liked the convatec stomahesive one better. Thank you. I've had couple peaple suggest the large skin barrior. Im in middle of trying various things so I appreciate all input. Just out of curiosity did you have your hernis repaired? If so how did it go? Im going to surgeon in few days to see what my options are.... @smarty your welcome. I have good stoma nurses who suggested it at the time and it worked out. I surely hope it can help you. Also they have hernia belts. Nu hope is one company that makes them and there is also a Coloplast brava belt. Your stoma nurse can fit you for one that works for your situation and she can order it for you. It is a prescription as is most things we use.

what I would do is remove my pouch with an adhesive remover wipe. Wash around stoma and area that bag was on with a wet paper towel using dial white soap ( not the waterfall one just dial white) then use a few more paper towels with water only to rinse the soap away. Dry the area with a paper towel. Use a skin barrier wipe. Let that dry and then apply my homemade ring made out of the 4x4 to my skin. I would then attach the pouch to that 4x4 homemade ring. Sometimes I used a regular cera ring in top of the 4x4 as well. As my hernia kept getting larger I had to experiment at that time. But it worked for me.
don’t know if any of this will help you but I thought I’d post in case it might.
yes I had 3 hernias fixed last year. I had an obstruction so surgery was a must. I had an umbilical hernia and then a parastomal hernia on the right which was where my temporary Ostomy was and then another parastomal hernia on the left where my permanent stoma is. The surgery went very well and I recovered very well. Mine was an open surgery due to the complexity of it all. I have mesh. It felt so good to get rid of that heavy feeling in my abdomen but now I think I may be getting a small one back on my left behind that stoma again. My fault for lifting. I’m working a lot of hours and sometimes I forget to say no I’m not lifting that!!! Anyhow I must be careful as he told me not to lift over 20 pounds. I was lifting a clients laundry basket and I think the awkwardness of the position and the distance I carried it had a factor in it.
