Hi everyone, I have not been on this site for awhile but thought I'd come on and ask if anyone has had trouble with Coloplast Mio and leaks? I have tried wearing the Mio with an Eakin seal/ring underneath, without the seal and with a 4" x 4" under the wafer but I always have leaks. I really wanted to like this product. BTW i have a colostomy. Also, the reason I tried switching to Mio is because I began having a lot of trouble clicking my usual bag closed. I use a 2 piece Coloplast wafer and pouch (the tan type). At times it would take me up to 15 minutes to get it to click closed. I even had to have my husband click it for me and he found it very difficult. I reported this to my distributor and then to Coloplast. It just seems unlikely that I am the only one experiencing such issues. Thanks in advance, Marci I have used the Coloplast Mio for years, with no leak problems. I don’t use the click system though. I’ve been happy with the “stick” system. Laurie Just a semicolon Hi @madrikh52, I'm sorry that you've been experiencing those leaks. Let's go through it in detail. If there's anything else you can think of that might be contributing to the leaks, it will be helpful to let us know. Just your friendly neighborhood ostomate. I used Mio for 10 days and had 7 leaks during that time. So the leak was sometimes on the same day, sometimes after 2 days but that was the longest wear time I could get. The leaks were under everything, so on my skin. When changing, I use a water wipe to cleanse my skin, then dry the skin with the cool setting of a hair dryer, apply the seal/ ring, then warm the wafer with the warm setting of the hair dryer before applying.I do not usually apply pressure for a minute. In the past I had a lot of trouble with leaking (several years ago now) and I thing it is mostly due to the consistency of my output which lends itself to pancaking. WIth the tan Coloplast click set up I usually don't have leaks at all or if I do, only after 5 or more days of wear. I'd really like to make the Mio work since it is so much easier to click. The reason I use the click on pouches is that I use pouch liners. Thanks! @madrikh52 Thanks for the additional details! 7 leaks in 10 days sounds awful, but good for you for making an effort to look for a solution. Is your stoma flush with the skin, or recessed under the skin line? What is your reason for using a barrier ring? When I try a new appliance, I like to go bare-bones with everything. Just a wafer to the skin and a bag on top. Then, if anything needs to be added, I can add it. But this gives me a good baseline to see how the appliance on its own is working. Would you be willing to try just the wafer with no barrier ring? Another thing I'm curious is whether your stoma retracts as it passes output. Mine sometimes does, and when it happens it can cause the hole of my stoma to aim at or below the wafer cutout (causing a leak). A convex appliance may be able to help in this case, but I'll usually keep an eye on things (literally, with a clear ostomy bag) and manually push around my stoma until this more difficult output passes. Just your friendly neighborhood ostomate. OK. So I tried Mio again and had 2 leaks in 3 days. I also tried it without the ring and still had a leak. I guess this product is just not for me. Does my stoma retract? Good question. And I really don't know but it's certainly possible. I do use the convex wafer and have done for years now. My stoma normally sits about 1 1/4" above the surface of my skin. Thank you for all your help! So I tried Mio again and had 2 leaks in 3 days. I also tried it without the ring and still had a leak. My stoma normally sits about 1 1/4" above the surface of my skin. The stoma length is good, so I don't see retraction as much of an issue. But it's too bad that you're still having a poor experience with the Mios. Before you dismiss them, give Coloplast a call and see if they can offer any more suggestions. You never know! Just your friendly neighborhood ostomate. I’ve had every leak issue under the sun and tried a number of different bags and come back to the Sensura Mio click every time. But my issues are due to scarring and dips in my skin and the skin being so beat up that it is really hard to get a good seal. -Liza I also wanted to ask, @madrikh52, what is your skin prep routine like? For example, I was trying a new adhesive remover wipe, and they are really oily. In fact, even after washing the skin with soap, it still feels like it could interfere with the adhesive. If you're using any moisturizer near the stoma or wafer, or any soap with moisturizers, or any other product other than plain water, you might want to cut them out for a few days to see if it helps. Just your friendly neighborhood ostomate. I use adhesive remover spray (Esenta by Convatec), then use a water wipe. Nothing else. If you've had pancaking leaks, then you know what they look like . There is no bag I know of that resists determined pancaking. Alter your diet to fix the problem. Canned gravy doesn't taste too bad for what it is, but makes my output thin. Find what works . Else go back to drainable bags and rinse with water absolute first sign of output when dealing with pancaking. Do not rinse thoroughly, just enough to loosen output . that will stop it from clumping together and add lubrication to inside of bag, then alter your diet as well . Hi, I use only Coloplast supplies as they seem to work well for me without too much skin irritation. I use Coloplast SenSura Mio Convex light barrier with a 4.22mm Brava Protective Seal (barrier seal) with the Coloplast click Ostomy pouch. I can wear mine 4-5 days on average. My ostomy retracts and that is why I use the barrier seal. When changing my appliance I clean remove all the glue with Coloplast adhesive remover and make sure to get all the old adhesive off. Then I take a hot shower and really make sure there is no residual adhesive or adhesive remover on my skin. I flush the ostomy area repeatedly. I dry off from shower and apply new appliance. I think rinsing the area well in shower helps ensure the skin is bare and ready for new application. Occasionally, but not often I will get a set up that leaks in a couple of days, but usually its when I rush the process. I also think that being in very hot environment will lessen the adhesive power of the glues this is why I do not sit in the hot tub or saunas at my gym unless I plan to change my set up that or the next day. Good luck I hope you find what works for you. CG cygo @madrikh52 the water wipe itself still has one ingredient in it and I've found those to cause adhesion problems. The problem with using wipes is they do contain other ingredients which can leave residues. Even the water wipes. Instead of water wipes maybe try paper towels. What i do is get a paper towel wet and soap it up with dial white or ivory soap as those do not have oils. Then I clean around the stoma. Take a new clean new paper towel and but water only to rinse all the soap off. Then i will do this about 3-4 times more using a new paper towel with water only to make sure I've gotten all the soap off. Sometimes I might do an extra soap up and rinse. Pat dry and then make sure everything's good and dry before putting the new bag on. I've found this to give great adhesion and seal. You can also use non woven 4x4 gauze in the same manner. I also wanted to mention that if you rinse your bag and your using wipes to clean up the bottom of the bag this too will break your seal due to the stuff in the wipes getting into the bag. So the next time you empty the residue from wiping it from the previous empty gets up in there and then gets up there and degrades the seal. What I do is take the wipe and rinse the heck out of it in the sink before wiping the bottom of my bag. I also want to mention that any soaps or shampoo and conditioners you use in the shower may gave oily stuff or moisturizing stuff in them and this can be a problem. Even a thing on your hands like hand lotions etc.. best to wash hands real well before you start the empty. I use gloves but hand lotions tend to get right through the gloves so I really stopped using hand lotion unless absolutely necessary. Also if your not getting all of the adhesive remover off your skin this can cause problems. These are just different things that have taken me years of figuring out since I've had my ostomy. I hope this will help. I had a client that was using the mio click and I used to have to change her bag. I can tell you that I understand about how hard that thing is to get to click on. I always noticed she had ostomy smells coming from her bag too even though we did everything right. When I used the one piece mio but not the click it seemed to stick really well and seemed to have a good seal but there was always a bad smell leaking out somehow. I found it to be coming from the end of the bag. Even though it was rolled up right if that thing gets full that output is going to leak out eventually. This is why I went back to my bag that has a clip. But a good idea is to take a paper towel or toilet paper and fold around the end of the bag just in case. This way yoj can see if anything leaks down there and not only will keep any unknown output odors that might be on the end of your bag getting into your cloths or your support garments. @madrikh52 your welcome. Let me know if any of this worked out for you. I hope you were able to stay in your pouch.
