Hi everyone, I have not been on this site for awhile but thought I'd come on and ask if anyone has had trouble with Coloplast Mio and leaks? I have tried wearing the Mio with an Eakin seal/ring underneath, without the seal and with a 4" x 4" under the wafer but I always have leaks. I really wanted to like this product. BTW i have a colostomy.

Also, the reason I tried switching to Mio is because I began having a lot of trouble clicking my usual bag closed. I use a 2 piece Coloplast wafer and pouch (the tan type). At times it would take me up to 15 minutes to get it to click closed. I even had to have my husband click it for me and he found it very difficult.

I reported this to my distributor and then to Coloplast. It just seems unlikely that I am the only one experiencing such issues.

Thanks in advance,

Marci

I have used the Coloplast Mio for years, with no leak problems. I don’t use the click system though. I’ve been happy with the “stick” system.

Hi @madrikh52, I'm sorry that you've been experiencing those leaks.

Let's go through it in detail.

  1. How long have you been using the Mio, and when did the leaks start?
  2. Do the leaks develop the same day or after a few days?
  3. Are the leaks between the barrier ring and wafer, or under everything (at the skin)?
  4. Do you pre-heat the wafer and use pressure when applying it for a minute? This can really help activate the adhesive on the wafer.

If there's anything else you can think of that might be contributing to the leaks, it will be helpful to let us know.

I used Mio for 10 days and had 7 leaks during that time. So the leak was sometimes on the same day, sometimes after 2 days but that was the longest wear time I could get.

The leaks were under everything, so on my skin.

When changing, I use a water wipe to cleanse my skin, then dry the skin with the cool setting of a hair dryer, apply the seal/ ring, then warm the wafer with the warm setting of the hair dryer before applying.I do not usually apply pressure for a minute.

In the past I had a lot of trouble with leaking (several years ago now) and I thing it is mostly due to the consistency of my output which lends itself to pancaking. WIth the tan Coloplast click set up I usually don't have leaks at all or if I do, only after 5 or more days of wear.

I'd really like to make the Mio work since it is so much easier to click. The reason I use the click on pouches is that I use pouch liners.

Thanks!

@madrikh52 Thanks for the additional details!

7 leaks in 10 days sounds awful, but good for you for making an effort to look for a solution.

Is your stoma flush with the skin, or recessed under the skin line?

What is your reason for using a barrier ring?

When I try a new appliance, I like to go bare-bones with everything. Just a wafer to the skin and a bag on top. Then, if anything needs to be added, I can add it. But this gives me a good baseline to see how the appliance on its own is working.

Would you be willing to try just the wafer with no barrier ring?

Another thing I'm curious is whether your stoma retracts as it passes output. Mine sometimes does, and when it happens it can cause the hole of my stoma to aim at or below the wafer cutout (causing a leak). A convex appliance may be able to help in this case, but I'll usually keep an eye on things (literally, with a clear ostomy bag) and manually push around my stoma until this more difficult output passes.

OK. So I tried Mio again and had 2 leaks in 3 days. I also tried it without the ring and still had a leak. I guess this product is just not for me.

Does my stoma retract? Good question. And I really don't know but it's certainly possible. I do use the convex wafer and have done for years now. My stoma normally sits about 1 1/4" above the surface of my skin.

Thank you for all your help!

The stoma length is good, so I don't see retraction as much of an issue.

But it's too bad that you're still having a poor experience with the Mios. Before you dismiss them, give Coloplast a call and see if they can offer any more suggestions. You never know!

I’ve had every leak issue under the sun and tried a number of different bags and come back to the Sensura Mio click every time. But my issues are due to scarring and dips in my skin and the skin being so beat up that it is really hard to get a good seal.

I also wanted to ask, @madrikh52, what is your skin prep routine like?

For example, I was trying a new adhesive remover wipe, and they are really oily. In fact, even after washing the skin with soap, it still feels like it could interfere with the adhesive.

If you're using any moisturizer near the stoma or wafer, or any soap with moisturizers, or any other product other than plain water, you might want to cut them out for a few days to see if it helps.

I use adhesive remover spray (Esenta by Convatec), then use a water wipe. Nothing else.

If you've had pancaking leaks, then you know what they look like .    There is no bag I know of that resists determined pancaking.  Alter your diet to fix the problem.   Canned gravy doesn't taste too bad for what it is, but makes my output thin.  Find what works .

Else go back to drainable bags and rinse with water absolute first sign of output when dealing with pancaking. Do not rinse thoroughly, just enough to loosen output . that will stop it from clumping together and add lubrication to inside of bag, then alter your diet as well .
