Hello Community, Since I got my iliostomy one year ago, the area where there’s often leakage has had a nearly continual open sore. I have a tiny stoma that is often below skin level, watery output, and a loop ileostomy. I have had no luck with any of the ideas and products suggested by local nurses and the forums. As a result, I have been extremely inactive since the surgery. Sometimes, Dilaudid is the only thing that can help. I am seeing a specialist in Boston soon and have hopes for the professional advice I can get from a renowned cancer clinic (why I had to have an Ilio). In the meantime, I keep hearing good things about Eakin rings. However, I am wary of the way I’ve heard they “meld” into your skin. My question is whether or not I should try the Eakin. The area constantly stings, burns and throbs. I’m ambivalent about peeling a barrier ring off an area that is so sensitive. Are they really difficult to remove? I am using the Coloplast seal now. Thank you for your input. Mere Hi 👋, Are you using a convex wafer , these are useful for a sunken stoma. If not discuss with your stoma nurse as they come in different levels. Yes Eakin rings are very good although can be hard to clean of while changing. Using an adhesive remover spray helps ease removing the old appliance. Crusting where the sore is helping healing. Eric has advice on how to go about that. Best wishes for getting sorted 👍 ileostomy 31st August 1994 for Crohns @john68 Thank you, John. Yes, using a convex wafer. Just wondering if the Eakin might be too difficult right now because of the excoriated skin. I would give the Eakin ring ago. If it stops the leaks then the skin will get a chance to heal. Eric recommends leaving the bag of if possible to give the skin a chance to heal. Always a temptation to over do products on broken skin, so use any thing sparingly 👍 ileostomy 31st August 1994 for Crohns Hi Mere, Are you currently using any barrier ring? If not that might be a good first step. Personally I prefer the Coloplast Brava barrier rings but everyone has their preferences. Adhesive remover removes the rings when you change bags. it will take time once you find a workable solution for your skin to heal, I had sore spots on my skin, I switched to a convex wafer, the Brava barrier rings and using the crusting technique and they are slowly healing. I also change bags every 3 days, they seem to last that long with no worry and I do not push it. I hope you find the help you need to resolve this. cygo using a convex wafer. Definitely discuss this with your stoma nurse, as Convex appliances can put additional pressure on your skin, creating sores and pressure points. But to answer your question, I've used barrier rings to heal the skin around my stoma: https://www.veganostomy.ca/healing-skin-around-the-stoma/ The biggest challenge, if your skin is weepy, is the barrier ring or wafer not sticking properly, which will create more leaks. Another option to consider are protective sheets, which may hold up better than barrier rings and provide a barrier to protect your skin from contact with your output. Best of luck! Just your friendly neighborhood ostomate. @john68 - Yes, I am using a convex wager. Have tried a few, right now with the Sensura Mio. The difficult Eakin cleanup is the reason I wrote the post. I don’t want to aggravate the wound anymore than neccesary. ✌🏼Mere
