Have read on different ostomy websites that water bottles with a straw are ok to use. Such as this one. But on some other sites it says don't drink from a straw or gulp from water bottle or jug. So i am here to get the best advice. Is drinking from a water bottle with a straw good or not? Or even gulping from just opening cap? Tk's This is news to me. Does it make a difference if you have a colostomy vs ileostomy? I drink from a water bottle with a straw every day, with no issues. I will be interested to see what others on this site think. Laurie Just a semicolon I have to say I have never had any problems with either. I suppose we do take in some air whether it’s eating or drinking. That’s why yer mammy told you eat with your mouth closed 😁 ileostomy 31st August 1994 for Crohns I have a double insulated stainless 64oz water bottle with flip up straw that I've been drinking from without issue for the entire 7 years I've had my mid-transverse ostomy. I fill it at 6am, and I know I've been drinking enough if I need to fill it atain at 6pm! Retired engineer, now goatherd I don’t seem to have trouble with a straw, but definitely get extra gas in my bag any time I have something carbonated. Therefore I try to save carbonated drinks for very rare occasions. Another think I have noticed—I can drink water all day and it will just make me have to pee more, but when I drink anything other than water, my bag fills up with liquid super fast. It doesn’t matter what it is. -Liza But on some other sites it says don't drink from a straw or gulp from water bottle or jug. The concern here is that gulping and/or drinking from a straw could cause you to swallow air, which will pass as gas into your bag. If you find that using a straw or gulping hasn't been a problem for you in the past (i.e. excess burping and/or excess gas), then it should be fine with a stoma. I personally don't have any issues with using a straw or a bottle exactly like that. 👌 Just your friendly neighborhood ostomate. @veganostomy Thank you very much for all your responses. Both Vegan and everyone else. I have since tries with a straw and sure enough no issues.Maybe should try other experimenting rather than just go by what I read.As everyone says we all react differently.Cheer's VO is this claim just for ileostomies? is there any hard data on the subject? I will swallow air on purpose to make myself burp. I'd bet a good deal that if one could swallow air to produce a "fart" every 12 yr old kid at camp would know about this. as we have all belched, it appears gas accumulates on the top side of the stomach. gas from reacting foods seems more likely, including sugars from drinks. I am surprised by how fast eating cheese or sour cream can gas up the bag. VO is this claim just for ileostomies? The claim applies to anyone with a digestive tract and who consumes beverages, too. is there any hard data on the subject? The actual medical term is tympanties or meteorism, and it's when excess gas enter the GI tract. Pretty much every respected health authority (i.e. Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, Johns Hopkins, etc.) suggest NOT drinking through a straw to help reduce intestinal gas. That's in addition to things like not chewing gum (some people swallow air), and to avoid carbonated beverages. What kind of hard data are you looking for? I'm sure there are studies on the subject. Just your friendly neighborhood ostomate.
