When I remove my appliance I have a 1/2 ' ring around the stoma which is discoloured (purple/red) and then a fainter wider ring outside of that one.  It the exact outline of my hollister convex wafer.  Is this normal? good/bad? is it a convex thing?  it does not hurt and will fade if I leave the skin bare while showering (not my favourite thing to do).

Sounds like just a pressure mark. I get those too in varying degrees depending on the appliance I'm wearing.

Convex would amplify this, but if you feel that it's too much pressure on your skin then you should speak with a nurse. Sometimes, people wearing convex appliances with support belts can cause pressure sores.

Great thanks.  I was originally in a flat flange but it wasn't working for me.  Maybe I should give it a try again.

If your stoma is flush with the skin or recessed (under the skin), then convex is probably what you'll need. If you have a protruding stoma then a flat wafer should be fine. :-)

Hi.  New to this forum. But am enjoying of the tips.  I also wear one piece Hollister iliestomy pouch.  It has been one year from my original ikiestomy ( due to contracting the C dif virus. Lost my colon an ended with the pouch). Tried several one pieces when in the Rehab facility.  But the all leaked. Until my Ostomy  nurse suggested the Hollister conv ex, one piece.  Good bye leaks.  But niw that you mention, I wear my pouch 7 days before placing a new one.  With no problems. But lately noticed the ring around my stoma, i have been using the stoma powder and seemed to get better.  Will keep you posted, when I changed pouch this Tuesday.     Thanks Eric for the wonderful work you are doing is so much appreciate it.  Liaelena

Hi Liaelena,

I also had a lot of leaks at first (which drove be nuts and  which drove me to find this great site hosted by Eric), and have had really good success with the Holister bag and a convex wafer. I also use a donut ring to help build up the convexity. This was suggested to me by my stoma nurse. My stoma 'telescopes', goes in and out. Sometimes it is flush with my skin and sometimes not. I guess when it is retracted is when it tends to leak. I try to change bag/and wafer to a schedule, not to a leak. Its good to stay out ahead of any leaks to protect your peristomal skin from the output. I change every 4th or 5th day.

I am getting some samples soon from the colopast people, to see how they work.

I also use EZ vents..a lifesaver ( at least a sleep saver). Eric reviews them here someplace. ( thanks again Eric). Keeping the gas vented really prevents the back pressure that I believe helps facilitate leaking. ( it also makes be nauseated). Good luck.

Thanks for mentioning the Ez vents. They can make a difference if "Ballooning" is an issue. My review is HERE.

I have one of those stomas, and like the other person mentioned, it 'telescopes' a bit too. When the stoma nurses first saw it was going to be inverted, they had me try a convex appliance. However, convexity made me have more problems. Luckily, I do not have an issue with leaks, but it's because of a lot of trial and error.

What works for me is a flat flange with a 1/2 ring to add a little protection on the bottom half of appliance. I find that the rings are too thick so I press them flat before either placing directly on the skin or on the appliance before putting it in place. I definitely see that 'pressure ring' at change time.

Don't be afraid to try out different things until you find one that works for you! I'm still learning, and Eric and this place have been a great help.
