Hello Everyone,

Occassionally, I have a problem where my stool is large and hard which makes t difficult and painful to pass.  During the first 9 months after my colostomy, I wound up in the ER for a couple of blockages. After that I read Eric 's advice regarding blockages and it has been of great help with the information he provides under that topic and I have been able to detect a potential blockage and avoid the ER with that  and the addition of probiotics recommended by a nutritionist and fiber.  Also found I must make a conscious effort to remain well hydrated.  However, I still experience these bouts that make the stool very difficult to pass.  I can detect if I massage the area around my stoma.  If anyone has experienced this, how has it been resolved.

Hey Fred, thanks for posting.

If your stool is still really hard to pass (because it's dry) and dietary changes aren't helping then your doctor may suggest stool softeners.

But I would give the recommendations from the nutritionist since time to work, in addition to trying new dietary strategies to loosen stool. This may come in the form of drinking fruit juice with meals or eating more foods known to loosen stool.

Without a doubt the most important thing is keeping hydrated and I sometimes find that difficult. I have stuck to water and tea and was under the impression that juice has a lot of sugar and should be avoided.

Juice can increase output in some, so if dehydration is an issue then you can try diluting it or use water rich foods instead (I love using tomatoes and cucumbers).
