I know many people (and quite a few of you guys on this forum) use Imodium to help with a high-output stoma.

Well, it looks like the FDA will be putting restrictions on Imodium as part of an effort to "curb abuse and overdose-related to opioid products".

From their press release:

Loperamide is safe at these approved doses. But when higher than recommended doses are taken we’ve received reports of serious heart problems and deaths with loperamide, particularly among people who are intentionally misusing or abusing high doses. The majority of reported serious heart problems occurred in individuals who were intentionally misusing and abusing high doses of loperamide.

The FDA added a warning to the product label in the spring of 2017 to warn of ingesting high doses of loperamide, including from abuse and misuse. Evidence suggests that package limitations and use of unit-dose packaging may reduce medication overdose and death.

Today we sent letters to the OTC manufacturers requesting that they implement changes consisting of packaging limitations and unit-of-dose packaging. We’re requesting that packages contain a limited amount of loperamide appropriate for use for short-term diarrhea according to the product label. One example is a single retail package containing eight 2-milligram capsules in blister packaging. We asked the manufacturers to take the necessary steps to implement these changes in a timely fashion to address these public health concerns.

How will this impact those of you who are taking Imodium?

Wow Eric this is interesting for sure . I have not taken Imodium since receiving my Norman always been kind of afraid to . But before getting Norman I used to take them like candy every time I wanted to go somewhere . Then it was like going from one extreme to another from unable to get away from the loo to being bloated and uncomfortable and not being able to go . So your thread is interesting . Thanks

I get my Rx for loperamide (Imodium) regularly.  I use normally 2 a day, sometimes more.  It is a God send at night for slowing down output and allowing me to sleep longer between emptying my pouch.  I have never had a problem with it.  I use it also during the day before going out for the same reason - slowing output.  I think it will affect OTC users, but not those getting Rxs from a physician.

I was wondering about this medication.?? and their kid folks of sorts of family's..  I have been given this medication for 2 years now. prescription, LOPERAMIDE- 2 mg. per capsules  After a while I was able to take this 10  -2mg  a day.. Dr. said I could do this.. Didn't help much.. Then I slowed it down to 3 in the morning then during the mid day (3-4)with liquids when I am  most thirsty--  This taken with  liquids did not stop the high out put.. I guess my inner thought were right.. NOT working for me.. Was my last hope... I do know that when I took 2 with meals/sanck's of these capsules at bed time-- I had pancaking and leaks.. In bed.. :-( Removed this completely for the past 7 months.. so far so good on that issue. (bed time) I still take these 3  capsules in the morning with breakfast.. Starting tomorrow 2/6/18 I will stop this morning routine.. And see what happens. ??  I truly feel that the GI Doctors don't really see what is what with these.. Kept on saying take  more. TEXT BOOK AGAIN!!  Now they want me to go on Gattex injections.  Who is my friend here?  I guess it is me, not the pill pushers!!! I have/had trust in this GI group---------  Hard to find another GI Dr.s as this is a large group--all over Ct. I  have seen about all of them so far.. (50) I wonder if I should go to Mass. ? Canada??????? Thanks for the input Eric.. :-)  God save us!!!!!!!!!!

I have tried everything and now I find this!!!????  I want so badly to receive my fluids and nutrition's via: small intestines.. I am NOT stressed out as I was 3 years ago.. so that is not it.. I have tried every form of "Imodium" on the market....... Different foods. Etc..... Small  meals, all day long snacks.. - My body cannot live this way with I.V. fluids for proper support much longer, then it will get worse.

I WAS told that I have my full small Intestines. But I wonder?????  My body  is performing like a bad case of S.B.S.   I feel like I am abusing the medical TEXT BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!  Proberly good for the rest of you and those to come along.. I just want to be a  normal Ostomate..  Maybe this is the life I am to have to alter these confusions.  M. test mouse.

Opioid addicts are abusing it and this unfortunately hurts legitimate users.

Some use it (Imodium) in large quantities to get high, and others will try to use it to help reduce withdrawal symptoms of their opioids. It also kills them or causes severe heart problems.

Addicts will try anything for a high, sadly.  This is what society has become.  Those of us who use medications as prescribed pay the price of those abusing it.  Sometimes, it is hard for me to wrap my head around what is going on now a days.  Sad really.   :-(

You need to take an abnormally high Dose  to get high Marcie . What we take is no where near what this article talks about . Any drug in extreme is dangerous. Heck too much Asprin will kill you . Junkies always find a way to get high. Sad .

Well, I must say I use OTC loperamide from Wal-Mart (cheapest and largest quantity of pills in the bottles).   I used them pre-ostomy and currently, so many years I have  taken it.  I usually take 4 pills in the A.M. and 4 more in the afternoon and 4 at night.  I have found this gives me some peace without constant BM's in the appliance so that it doesn't interfere with daily activities.   Even with that dose, my bowels start to move in the mid to late afternoon, and it continues most days through to bedtime, and many times it hinders me getting to sleep.  So, even loperamide hasn't "solved" the frequency of BM's but makes it as tolerable as I have ever had.  One side effect is if I get "unbusy" I get sleepy.  In my case I have to weigh the benefits vs. the risks.  In the past I had prescribed Lomotil, which is stronger, works on the same principle, and has atropine in it also.  This problem we have will probably never be completely "solved", but we do what we need to do to have the best quality of life we can.  Thanks for the site, Eric
