Saw my Doctor today. Unfortunately a setback has occurred. Because of my background of colon cancer with my Dad and Grandfather, I have always been diligent in getting my Colonoscopies every year. The Doctor has found a Polyp that is concerning, so soon will need a Colonoscopy through my Stoma 😖 AND the rectum. The Stoma invasion freaks me out! Being it's so vascular, it's concerning to me. It's been a rough year and I am exhausted. She is going to contact my Gastroenteroligist and get things set up for the Colonoscopy.

Oh gosh I'm so sorry. I sure hope they can find that when all the tests are done, that you can have the reversal if you want it..

I’m sorry to hear of your setback. A positive is that they are being thorough. They are looking out for you and being careful. Well wishes and everything will be ok.

Jillian... Well that sucks big time!! I hope your test results will be clear when all is said & done.  Its always troubling to have issues crop up that can lead to cancer. My Heart is very much with you. ❤️ .  I always get a lot of household chores & projects done  waiting for these kinds of tests!

Is this your first experience with a stoma scope??   I want to encourage you not to worry too much about the "stoma invasion".  I have had several SEDATED scopes thru my stoma & I haven't had a bad experience for the  "scope" alone.

However when the pouch was removed to do the scope, whoever removed it did not do it carefully at all!!  They must of just pulled the pouch off my skin & in the process pulled of bits & pieces of my skin with it leaving several bleeding & stinging raw areas under my pouch. I had to change the pouch a 3rd time that morning to investigate what the burning was from. I'll admit I was fairly stunned by it all as they should have known better & been a lot more careful. Ohhhh Yes,   I spoke to the nurses in recovery & later to My  "THEN"  GI in his office.

Assuming you'll be sedated as I was, may I suggest you ask if you can remove the pouch before sedation so you can hopefully avoid this.  I did make the GI  very aware of the skin issues left behind & the time it took to heal by this carelessness. I had several photos to show him as well  & I even had him look at the dates &  photos taken from shortly after discovering the wounds.

Please keep us in the loop .

I'm sorry that you've had a setback, @jillian. I think that @chelly is right in that it's really good that your medical team is being thorough with everything.

I'm hopeful that once they've cleared you, you'll be full steam ahead!

FYI, getting scoped through the stoma isn't as scary as it sounds. I had mine done while fully awake (because I was interested in watching the camera monitor!) and it felt like gas pressure more than anything. I do hope that your scopes are quick and easy.

Best of luck!

Hi Jillian, I have had a few scopes via the stoma, and had no problems at all. I wear a two-piece, and I believe they unsnapped the pouch and removed it but left the plate for the procedure. There was no bleeding. I did do a fresh change right before I went to the clinic for the procedure, and of course because of the preparation drink (not too fond of that!) there was nothing coming out of the stoma. LL

Jillian, I will echo what others have said - a colonoscopy through the stoma is not a problem. I also have mine now without sedation because I like to see the monitor screen. I don’t have any pain at all; just a feeling of fullness or gas, as Eric mentioned. I wear a 2 piece, but they just go in through the bottom of my pouch. Easy peasey.
