Today was one of those days... Lately, every time I shower, I wind up with an ostomy leak, so have only been showering every other day for the last couple weeks. I also have the constraint of only being able to shower just before a wound dressing change. Most weekdays that is early in the morning before my hubby leaves for work. Today would have been a shower day, but I had an ostomy appt scheduled at 2:30 this afternoon, so I decided to go without the shower and we changed the wound dressing at 5;30 this morning and I went back to bed. When I got up later, I had a leak. Ugh. So I changed my appliance, using a one-piece, which I don’t like as well and stomadhesive paste, which does not work as well as brava paste for me. But I figured it just had to make it a couple hours. So I was almost ready to leave, just putting on my shoes and I noticed another leak. What the heck?? So in order to not be late for my appt, I just stuck a Kleenex in my pants where the leak was and left. I had my ostomy appt, where she used a new, smaller wafer, which I really liked and some new extenders that are made for sensitive skin. She also suggested I use nasal spray on my rashy skin because it has steroids. I was a little worried that she didn’t use enough paste though. My skin is very difficult. So, tonight I was getting ready for bed, impressed with how well the new extenders were holding, when I noticed there was output breaking through under the wafer. I was tempted to try to ride it thru the night to get my shower in the morning, but decided that was a bad idea, given the condition of my skin. So I jumped in the shower tonight and then put on my 4th appliance in less than 24 hours. Ugh!! 😕 -Liza Liza, Yup four in a day is a lot. I admire your patience with all of this ostomy stuff you have going on. I sure hope you find solutions soon enough. A year of frustrations one after the other earns you a medal, does it not? Kudos to your hubby for changing your dressings too. How sweet, loving and caring of him! I am not so sure I would be willing to get up for a 5:30 in the morning anything in my life!!! Do not give up on finding a solution or a combo that works for you after a year. Are you keeping track of what you use and what works best to not get confused by it all, or do you just have a really good memory? All the best of solutions to you as you continue your healing journey into 2020!!! Linda Hi Liza, I hope and pray that you find a solution to your leaking problem. I can't imagine the frustration you must be going through, but I give you a great deal of credit for hanging in there!!! Thank heaven you have a husband who is so supportive and helpful. Wishing you healing in the New Year to come. God bless, Stella Hi Liza, Just taking a quick break from work and checking the community and saw this topic. What a huge pain! Have you received the sample from Trio yet and had a chance to try it? Tony That's not good! Lately, every time I shower, I wind up with an ostomy leak, This is concerning as showers should not be giving you problems. Out of curiosity, if you have a shower without any shampoo, conditioner, soap, etc., do you notice a problem because of the shower? Just your friendly neighborhood ostomate. Out of curiosity, if you have a shower without any shampoo, conditioner, soap, etc., do you notice a problem because of the shower? Yes, it seems to be the shower. Because the seal on my wafer never stays stuck well, any water works in under the wafer. When I was using the leftover drape to secure the wafer, I could usually get through a shower, but now that my skin is reacting so horribly to the drape, I have just been using medical tape, which doesn’t hold up to water well. I need to keep experimenting with how to keep the wafer in place in the shower. -Liza Do you use a protective barrier ring under the wafer. I have used the Brava Protective Seal and Cavilon Protective film with Hollister 2-piece wafer for about 3 years and have never had a leak. I shower bagless with it it on and use a hair dryer to dry after the shower. I can sometime go more that 5 days wear time. Hi Fred. Rings didn’t really work for me. The paste is much more effective. Thanks for the suggestion though. 😀 -Liza Hi LIza, You have probably been asked this before - and my memory is hazy as it is - but have you tried the wafer extenders or is your skin sensitive to the adhesives? Stella Hi Stella, I definitely use extenders, though I have the same problem. The dryness of my skin causes the adhesiveness to quickly wear off. And at my last ostomy nurse appt last week, she said it looked like my skin was having a problem with my coloplast extenders and she used a Hollister one she said was for sensitive skin. It is working much better so far. She gave me a couple samples and I’m going to change my monthly order so I get these instead of the coloplast ones. -Liza
