I have a colonoscopy scheduled soon for the first time since my colostomy surgery and I'm wondering if any of you have any tips for when I do the prep. This will obviously be different emptying out my bowels into my bag then my rear end.

Should I be using a high output put bag for the day? Should I stay home etc?

On the day of the procedure should I ask for sedation?

Thanks in advance...

your doctor should give you the details, i don't really recall anymore, but plan 2  1/2 to 3  1/2  hours of running to the bathroom to empty bag til you are getting just clean water out, it might take and hour before things start moving.  ..   i put on a clean 2 piece bag the morning of colonoscopy, gives the staff any easy stink free time.    they can easily take the bag off and replace once done.

Yes, definitely stay home and near the bathroom. It might take several hours before you have any output, but you never know. A high output pouch might be a good idea for overnight - I had a really bad leak last time during the night.

Your doctor should be able to go up through your pouch so you don’t have to take it off (if it opens from the bottom) and you won’t need a new one after the procedure. I didn’t have enough sedation last time, and I found it uncomfortable, but I have had it (since colostomy surgery) while I was awake for the whole thing, and it was not uncomfortable. Same doctor, so I’m not sure why it was so different.

I brought an extra set (pouch and flange) along to my more recent colonoscopy, in case they needed it (put them in a ziploc bag). They didn’t, but told me that they appreciated that.

For my first colonoscopy I had an extra capacity pouch but really, since I was in the bathroom so often to empty, just used the regular after that.  Put on a whole new set before going to the appointment, of course.

I love the smell of coffee in the morning. It smells like .... victory.

Hey @johnny5, I do have a few articles that might give you some insight as I've been scoped through the stoma. Keep in mind that instructions are usually provided by your clinic or doctor, and may be different for a colonoscopy (I have an ileostomy).

This was my experience the first time.

Some info about prep.

More info on prep (general colonoscopy, not specific to one through the stoma).

Because you'll be doing bowel prep, I'd plan to stay home and close to a bathroom when taking the prep solution. Once you're "cleaned out", your output should slow to nothing or just some liquid.

I don't get sedated, mostly because I don't react well to sedatives or anaesthesia, but also because I like to see the screen while the scope is being done. I found it uncomfortable (like gas pains), but not horrible.

Good luck!
