No, not the fun kind! Dumb question but anyone know how much isopropyl alcohol is needed and how long it takes to remove the glossy coating from bags before applying the EZ vent? Feel like I used quite a bit with elbow grease and saw no change in the finish on a transparent coloplast Mio Click. I just gave up and slapped the vent on as was worried about compromising the integrity of the bag which would defeat the purpose of the product. 30 seconds, 15 minutes? The directions are vague. Thanks! Great question. Use isopropyl alcohol that is 90% or more for best results; less than that might not work as well or could require way more effort. I put the alcohol on a gauze pad (you can even use those makeup cleaning pads) and it shouldn't' take more than 10 seconds. Don't worry too much if you don't get rid of the shine - as long as you've used the alcohol, the surface will be ready for the adhesive on the back of the EZ-Vent. Just your friendly neighborhood ostomate. Thanks! I definitely went overboard then, as usual! Thanks! I definitely went overboard then, as usual! It's all a learning experience :) On the bright side, moving forward you won't have to spend so much time on prepping the EZ-Vent! Just your friendly neighborhood ostomate. alcohol won't remove plastics shine, a chemical that did, you would not want to use, meaning the chemical would start degrading(eating) the plastic. the idea is to remove any oils or lubricants that might be there from the manufacturing process, so the sticky will stick. the times I've put velcro dots on bags, I had no alcohol so I just rub well with a piece of paper towel 3-4 seconds. never a failure. I use the isopropyl ( well, my husband does) . Like Eric says , just a quick wipe to get any oils etc off. You do not have to remove the shine. They stick quite well with pressure after a quick wipe. My husband usually prepare 10 or 20 bags at a time. I know... I am very lucky! Onset of severe Ulcerative Colitus Oct.2012. Subtotal colectomy with illiostomy July 2015; Peristomal hernia repair ( Sugarbaker, mesh, laparoscopic) May 2017. Can I please borrow your husband? Lol! My pharmacist brings in 99% alcohol for me. The firse time I stuck them on it took 15-20 min. of scrubbing to get the shine off one bag. I was doing 20 each time and it took 2 days of intermittent to get the shine off. It was exhausting, discouraging and took forever!!! Now, it takes about 3 min. each and I can do two bags at a time. I wet 1/4 of a paper towel with the alcohol, (scrunch it), and put it one the bag to sit where I want the plug to go, then I do the same thing on another, and take turns rubbing them 15 times each repeating till the shine is gone. Then repeat to two more till I done. The shine "DOES" come off the bag this way. When I have not removed the shine all the way, I have had the *odd* plug come partly off. Climate maybe ? Another tip...I warm the sticky part of the plug with my blow dryer for a few seconds and then quickly stick it on the pouch. Then I apply firm pressure on the vent with... I had my son cut about one inch off an old broom handle I had and then drill a hole in the center of the wood, so the little vent hole fits into it. I put that wood piece over then stuck on vent to apply even pressure to secure it all around in one shot. I don't have enough fat on my fingers to just use them. After the very first few bags, I used a flat bread and butter knife to apply an even pressure while the sticky part was still warm. The manufacturer would do well to put a small tab on that little plastic piece that we have to remove to stick the vent on. I get the shine off every time I do this with the 99% alcohol. I hope this helps! Linda Sounds like you have quite the system down! I can commiserate with the lack of finger fat right now. Mine are so shrunken and desiccated my phone doesn’t recognize my fingerprints! Gangster style. wish I could take some from my prednisone cheeks and share with the rest of my body. Oh, the pure joy of prednisone! I remember my hamster cheeks well! I would like to have, some of anybodies extra stores of fat to add to a few designated places on my body as well!!! My back butt for instance. Even my wrinkling face could use a few ounces back. When I was over weight, compliments of a sleepy thyroid gland I was labeled obese by my Doctor after he did the BMI scale thing. I weighed 180 + lbs. then, depending on what my lovely guts were holding in storage space! My new GI said that she finds that scale unneccessary because most people have a "healthy weight" that we go by, this is true of me. My healthiest weight is 140-150 lbs. I am 5 ft. 6 in. tall and large (boned) framed, plus I exercised and had some nice muscle on me but nothing showy! Sure I had a tummy but it was mostly all gas and bloating going on, yes, enough to make me look nine months pregnant somedays. Even now at 120 lbs., I have to wear size large to get the sleeve and leg length I need in anything I wear, size Xl in pajama bottoms and shirts or they are all just too short and I like to be warm at night, not breezy. There is nothing better then a pair of flannel p.j.s! in my books! Being malnourished from malabsorption shows in tests but not always to look at me unless you see the whole picture including ribs, tailbone & my hair! I hope you get your fat back real soon so you can have finger prints again! This kind of skinny is uncomfortable! Have they tested your cholesterol level? After years of having hereditary high cholesterol, I am now told my level is way too low. Have you been told you too, are malnourished? Linda JTVT, P.S. I also use a nut pick, the size of a piece of wire hanger to heat on my stove and melt the hole in the plastic thru the vent. Ofcourse I use a pier that holds and locks the wire in place so I don't burn my fingers. Clipping, even with the help of the most pointed scissors just above drove my off a cliff! If you do this, you have to make sure you do not melt on thru to the other side of the bags plastic, or the little tunnel the post on the vent goes into, not like someone else...I know who did this... causing a horrific mess one day! Hmmm, I wonder just whom that was!!!? My son helps me with this part now, because I'm too shakey and my aim is off. I hold the bag with the vent raised off and away from the rest of it to melt this hole. Daniel has really good aim and a steady hand! You can ask your pharmacist to bring in the 99% alcohol for you. I also have to sign a paper for it, saying I won't use it for nasty reasons! Good luck! Linda Oh, the pure joy of prednisone! Linda-like I told you before, you are welcome to as much of my fat stores as you would like. Ha ha. That is the one drawback of getting healthier. After getting out of the hospital, I was encouraged to eat a lot, especially protein. And surprise, when the food actually stayed in me, the weight started coming back. I too have a sleepy thyroid, for which I am now taking medication. And after just a week on prednisone, I completely feel for anyone on it, especially those for any extended period of time. JTVT - love your gangster style comment. ? -Liza
