Hey gang, as another note to the thread A tip to relieve a blockage, I wanted to share something that I've experienced when using prune juice to flush my bowels. When testing a gelling product for a review, I needed to produce liquid output so I can see how effective the product was - so I used prune juice, which guarantees I'll have liquid output. So I put the gelling product in my pouch, drank some prune juice and waited - sure enough, liquid output, but it wasn't gelling - at all! I tested the gelling product in water and it worked just fine. I repeated this experiment a few times with the same failed results, so I contacted the manufacturer. Upon investigation, I learned that the high potassium content of the prune juice may have interfered with the ability for the product to actually gel. This may not be the case for every gelling product, so if you do plan to employ the prune juice trick to flush your system out and rely on gelling products to keep your output manageable, please test beforehand. If you do, I'd love to hear your experiences as well! Just your friendly neighborhood ostomate.
