Well, I decided to go ahead and get a hole cutter because Oscar is holding firm at 7/8. I've only used it once, so ongoing comments or edits will be made. I am using the Nu Hope Hole Cutter http://nu-hope.com/products.php?redirect=/products/access/holeCutter.php

It's a press type punch, has a large surface to press down with the palm of your hand. You have to use some kind of cutting board with it. This might be very useful for those who lack the dexterity/ hand strength to use a pair of scissors. It did not take a lot of strength to press through the material, I did have to roll my weight around the hand surface to cut through but was still easy. The hole left is nice and smooth. The company can resharpen the blade, not sure what it costs or if it costs at this time.

It is only usable on two piece bags, however if you know a person with tools you might be able to get an inexpensive plastic cutting board narrow enough to be inserted into the inlet of the once piece ostomy bag. Thread it up to the top and use the punch. I'll see if this theoretical work around works eventually, I have a small stash of one pieces I wear sometimes.

I hated cutting the hole with scissors and started buying precut barriers. My size is also 7/8" and 1" holes work perfectly with a ring.

Thanks for sharing your experiences! I have to cut my wafer because my stoma changes slightly with each appliance change so it's not consistent enough to use a punch, but I love the idea.

Out of curiosity, if your stoma consistent, why not go for a pre-cut wafer?

I agree with Bago. Precut or moldable wafers are the best way to go. I tried both out and found them far superior to scissors.

A serious backlog of uncut flanges, somehow I've got what amounts to 2 months worth. I'm not sure if I will stick with the cutter but it is something to try. Where a precut hole is located exactly centered I can make the hole less on center to expose more skin to air. It's not a lot, but little bits help.

Yes great idea custom cutting allows one to move hole over if needed for custom placement  . Luckily I can use pre cuts .

Bango that is what I use pre cut 1 inch.. If needed, I use the seal ring for extra areas that need the pillow affect. Which Nellie love the whole pillow............ She is off a bit to one side but the one inch is perfect..

I use flats, luckily Oscar does not need coaxing out. I still have some large size flanges and bags to use and those swallow my midline incision if I cut them centered...

Marcie ,

Why don't you use flat if Nellie sticks out 1 inch ?

I have thought of that.......... But as every one else here, a new step is hard.  I did try a flat, and got leaks right away..  Nellie is loop sided and when she is ready to bow- she pulls in and then out again..... Amazing to watch when I am getting a new dress on her-- My whole stomach goes in, she disappears, and then I go for the tissues of grab the old pouch for the collection..  She  is a mover....  Think someone gave her a pep pill..

So I will  have to cut sometimes when I get on Gattex, as Nellie will change her model Pro- figure  of now..  Cutting in the beginning, was hard.  Oval-- (that was a pain with the oval shape being sharper on the right died) then she grew after a few months.  I am ordering my supply's monthly now..

So will be back to cutting again.....  Those scissore's are so expensive!!!!!!! I sharpen them with a nail emery board. If any one is interested........

Oscar with a penny right against it for scale. Sometimes Oscar does clamp down but most of the time he goes halfway and back out again.

Pretty Oscar !!!!!!!! Very nice measurement picture with the penny!! Very smart!! And u use a flat wafer? You cut right? What type of pouching system do u use? Maybe if I did try a flat, pancaking would not be such a worry? Anyone????? Advise?? Eric?? Nellie is about the same size.

Felicity, Do you cut to the exact size?  Or do u leave some space for the imagation of Oscar? And do u do the pillow effect around the cut edges with the seal ring? or do u just put the seal ting on top of the cutting? Thanks.. m.

7/8ths leaves a very thin margin around Oscar, I apply Adapt paste around the cut out. Usually some oozes out alongside Oscar. I use Hollister brand, currently the middle size line, red if I remember. I've been using the filtered bags but have had pancaking issues bad enough to make me have to change 3 times in 6 days. I've taped the filter over, we'll see if it is still a problem.

I don't use a skin protector, I seem to leak worse with it.

Go with the flat version of what you're using already. If that doesn't work, sample other products.

I use ostomy scissors by Coloplast to cut mine. Have used the same pair for years and it still cuts good as new. They are cheap and sometimes Coloplast gives them away for free.

Best thing for cutting hole is Cuticle scissors . They are super sharp, small and curved just right . When I was cutting I would wipe down with alcohol to removed adhesive residue.

So, if you ever have to go stay at that lovely hotel where you meet all the Nurses and Drs and they use their supplies on you ask if you can take any unused stuff home with you. I know that at least for the hospital I was in once they bring it in your room they cannot restock it. I got a pair of scissors last time I was in and 3 sets of bag/ flanges.
