Hey guys,

I've updated several key software that controls the forum, and that introduces quite a few bug fixes and new features.

Multi-Quote highlighting

One feature that I really love is the ability to now highly text from someone else's reply (or multiple replies) and have them come up neatly in my edit window. This not only allows for replying to multiple people or points in a single thread, but it makes doing it so much easier than before. Let me know how you guys like it! (see screenshot of what it looks like in action).

Create spoilers

(Currently broken... investigating)

I don't think this will be a hugely popular feature, but it is nice to see. You can now create a spoiler by clicking on the button in your edit screen that looks like a circle with a + in the middle. This will give you a few options to add a spoiler that stays hidden until someone clicks on it.

Auto-grow (autoresize) feature for topic/post editors

Previously, when you wrote a new topic or reply, the edit window would need to be scrolled as you type more than a few lines. Now, it should grow to fit the length of your post.

Reply button automatically adds post author @nickname in editor

Sometimes, when replying to a post that isn't directly above your reply, it can get confusing for others to know who you are replying to. Now, when you hit "reply" to a specific post, that user name will be automatically inserted into your editor window.

Note: This will send a notification email to the user that you replied to their comment. If this becomes too much of a nuisance, please let me know and I can disable the email notification when this feature is used.

Not yet enabled, but I'm considering it: Maximum character limit in posts

I do need your feedback on this one. Generally speaking, most replies should be short and sweet, but I know that many of us have more than a few sentences to share. On one hand, long replies (especially in The Lounge) can be entertaining and fun to read, however, in most general or specific topics, long replies can have a negative effect that causes users to not read the reply or abandon the thread.

Setting a maximum character limit may help with this, but it may have unforeseen and unintended consequences.

Here are some examples of what various posts look like at different character lengths:

250 characters:

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Morbi gravida sagittis ante. Morbi sollicitudin, ipsum nec euismod aliquet, eros lorem tempus urna, at semper metus lectus aliquet sapien. Nunc commodo elit id orci dignissim, a porta volutpat.

Donec id dui eu nunc cursus aliquam sed id turpis. Cras non mattis mi, id commodo mauris. Ut ultrices ullamcorper venenatis. Aenean in ultrices leo.

Aliquam vitae mauris a massa sodales eleifend. Proin commodo tortor ut dui suscipit mollis sed in erat. Aliquam erat volutpat. Donec iaculis arcu in ante aliquam, eget elementum enim laoreet. Fusce facilisis, lorem id lacinia consectetur, orci magna auctor nisl, vitae dictum libero elit imperdiet lacus. Cras semper orci metus, id ornare tortor pretium non. Fusce congue porttitor nunc, id cras amet.

Nullam at efficitur neque. Ut et erat lacus. Duis imperdiet malesuada dui eu pharetra. Aliquam erat volutpat. Etiam justo tellus, tristique tempus finibus pellentesque, vulputate a massa. Fusce in magna nulla. Morbi at egestas justo. Suspendisse quis posuere.

Do any of these look like reasonable limits? Would implementing such a limit cause any problems?

Thanks for reading. If you encounter any issues, please report them in the bug reports section of the forum: https://www.veganostomy.ca/community/bug-reports/

Hi Eric, Many thanks for the work behind this. On the length of posts my thoughts are 1000 characters would accommodate questions or reply’s.

I think 1000 characters would be reasonable - however, setting a limit would include my own posts as there's no way to currently override the limit per user/user group.  I've let the devs know that this would be a nice feature to add so it's not all or nothing.

Now I would see that as a problem, Posts by your self could be part of an interview or description of a product.

Eric,

I so admire the time and effort you put into this site!!  You are a rock star!!

Definitely don't limit yourself on your posts. You have way to much good information to share. If they can set it up to limit others, but not you, that would work. Or maybe a way to not limit the original post, but limit replies. If you can do that, then I agree with John that 1000 characters seems reasonable. Though seeing 1000 or 2000 characters in a language I can read might not seem like as much. ?

I think the spoilers, though probably unnecessary, would be fun. I'm already trying to think of spoilers to post. Lol.

This would be an interesting compromise. I would actually prefer it worked like that.

I think a limit of thousand words would be good ... see how that goes. A limit for us , but NOT for you.  It would force me to collect my thoughts better anyway! ALWAYS a good thing.

And if its not in Latin,  fewer words would go far. ( Is that Latin?).

Thanks for all this Eric!

It's actually gibberish, but a very common and specific gibberish for when you need to fill in text ?

I guess Latin and gibberish look the same to me ... just like Greek!

Thanks. It DOES give one an idea of what a certain number of words looks like. Very helpful.
