Had a perforated bowel in March. Emergency surgery and in Trauma and ICU. In Hospital for almost a month. Had history of Divirticulitis.  Quite a shock what I went through! I am to have the Reversal in January, but thinking very carefully before having the surgery. In regards to my Colostomy. I developed a Hernia behind the Stoma, which I hear is quite common.  A foot of my Colon was taken.

Welcome, Jillian. That sounds like quite the ordeal! I hope that you're at least feeling better now.

Hernias are common, and don't usually need intervention unless it markedly limits a person's quality of life. Since you are having a reversal, that will be "fixed" during your reversal.

Good luck with everything! Feel free to post any questions you have in the appropriate category. 🤗

@veganostomy If having a large output (diarrhea), it pulls away the Eakin Cohesive seal. So a complete change of seal, wafer and bag is necessary. Doesn't happen often. I take 2 Imodium to stop the large output. However I never have a leak onto skin. Just the seal pulling away from Stoma and explosing skin underneath.

Hi Jillian and welcome, if I am right in thinking what you are describing, it sounds like the output is degrading the ring. This will happen but will be speeded up due to the loose output. If you are going a long time between changing I would go a little earlier. Some rings degrade quicker than others.

@john68 Thank you for responding John! No, it doesn't happen often. It is just kind of alarming to see it happening. I just needed to know if this can be a common thing. Most important is my Stoma is healthy and thriving. Lol

Any appliance will show signs of wear. A healthy stoma is a nice pick colour. Measuring a stoma is important especially when it’s brand new out of the box. Always have a good look when changing at both the old appliance and the stoma and skin. Get familiar so you spot any change 👍

@john68 I am trying to connect as well with those that have had the Reversal? The chat rooms that I connected with previously (but no longer with because very outdated from years ago) didn't really offer much....very generalized.

Hi Jillian, You will find VO very much current and up to date. Eric has lots of information across all aspects of ostomy life. And their are members who have had reversals. Starting a new topic with a title related would get attention 👍

If having a large output (diarrhea), it pulls away the Eakin Cohesive seal.

This can be alarming, for sure! I find that using heat and pressure (using my hand) when applying a ring or wafer helps the adhesive to better bond to my skin. It won't prevent every leak from happening, but it does help.

If you find that Eakin seals are "melting", consider trying something like the Coloplast Protective Ring or something more durable.
