I recently had permanent ileostomy surgery back in March 2017. I have noticed that the opening of my stoma is slightly off-centered and pointing up a bit. When I have output it still is getting in the bag for the most part, but sometimes there is output sitting on the barrier ring and getting on my skin towards the side where the opening is pointing. Are there any suggestions to keep this from happening? Does anyone else have issues with a slightly off-centered stoma opening? Hi Berri, Welcome to the forums! Stomas pointing in various directions does happen - sometimes they point up, down, or sideways. As you've experienced, it can create problems. I have a few suggestions: - Try to cut your wafer so that your stoma isn't directly in the center, but offset a little so that the opening of your stoma is either closer or further away from the edge (or flange if it's a two-piece system). You'll have to experiment to see if either way works better than having it in the center. - With the guidance of a stoma nurse, a convex appliance may help to push your stoma out a bit further so that the opening isn't as close to the wafer. This may not be an appropriate option for you, which is why I suggest that a stoma nurse evaluates and makes the decision for you. Just your friendly neighborhood ostomate. As Eric says, it is just trial and error, not just with different products but how you apply them. Another useful product are the Coloplast barrier sheets. They are fine sheets that you cut a hole in and place them on the skin underneath the bag. They are good because they give the bag something to stick to, but more importantly they form a protective layer over the skin to stop any stool coming in contact with the skin. Thank you guys! I will definitely be looking into these suggestions and see what works for me!
