Hey folks, I’m looking into taking a supplement for my allergies and try come in capsule form. Does anyone have any thoughts on how this will break down with an ileostomy? Could it cause a blockage? Here’s the product: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/aw/d/B00CORMVWC/

Thanks!!

I would suggest contacting the manufacturer to find out if that product is a slow-release or delayed release product. It doesn't look like it is, but that would be my only concern.

It’s not, thankfully. I was more worried about the breakdown of the outer capsule. I have heard stories of capsules and gel caps casings getting caught and causing a blockage as they don’t dissolve properly. I was wondering if anyone had any experience/knowledge around that potentially happening.

HI Diana, I am an ileostomy also, I take capsule meds.  I take 4 in the morning.. for starters.  I eat a bowl of cherroes, 1/2 of a banana and a good glass of O.J. with these.. When I have taken a few bites of my cereal and a bit of the banana, I have 2 capsules  and drink some of my juice, then eat some more and take the others that way. I have found no problems with my meds of this sort. The trick is to keep the meds in your system longer.  When I need to take more capsules during the day, I have a few crackers, or peanut butter sandwich with a good amount of fluids.

As far as long lasting medications?  We have no colon,  so we don't get the full medicine that is for the normal of our past being. Check with you GI Dr. about this... Also wax coated meds. some here have found them in their pouches.  I have not..

One medication I take Dr. had to up the dose 2 times--as the normal dose did not work for me as I am as you.. Ileostomy............ The longer you can keep these in your system the better you intake for your body.. Avoid coffee !!!  If I want a nice cup of coffee? I have it about 3 hours later.. Good luck and feel better.........

Thank you to everyone for your tips and feedback! I appreciate it very much! I’m definitely going to try the eating/drinking routine.

Diana,  Allergy meds, most of them-can make you tired.  Do not double up on these!!  Talk with your Dr. first.. As far as outside allergies go, the best nature  way is buying honey from a very near by honey bee farm.. Put a tablespoon in your tea, by doing this, your body is advancing in the near by allergies on it own.  I went to the Dr, for shots, took a few years I was o.k. then I moved!!  Totally new forms of outside allergies.. I was told that even if I moved 5 miles away, my allergies would change. Odd thing to deal with, I know, but as always "time" is the key. I have never had a blockage because of my meds. I do not take allergy medications now.  Just the honey routine.
