Had my 1st surgery 1 1/2 years ago, and from day one have been drinking ensure/Walmart brand of protein drinks once or twice a day for lunch and dinner to attempted weight gain from the 25lbs I lost.

after lunch and dinner I sounded like a cross between a model T and turning on a garden hose for the first time in spring.  A lot of fast moving gassy liquid type outputs. I stopped drinking these for a couple of days now and have noticed a big slowdown in motility, less noise and thicker outputs…I hope it continues..

I've been able to try quite a few brands and flavors of protein powders over the last few years.

A few observations (remember, though, I don't drink dairy) :

  • Chocolate flavor flows my output and turns it into sludge. This is similar to when I actually eat cocoa anything.
  • Some brands include prebiotic in their powder, which can cause gas and changes to output. It does take a few weeks for your body to adjust.
  • Having these powders with water instead of milk can also change the consistency of your output.
  • Making sure you drink plenty of fluids or mix the powder with more liquid then suggested can be helpful.
  • Some brands just tend to cause crazy changes in output for no specific reason, but many contains other ingredients to improve their nutritional profile.
  • Some protein powders are also meal replacements and tend to act differently on the body than just protein powder.
  • Protein powder tends to cause more odor in my output. It's the protein as this can happen with high-protein foods as well.

I suggest trying a few brands to see if things change. That is, of you feel the need for a product like this.

Ensure has a lot of  maltodextrin, corn syrup in the ingredients list. they could cause Bacterial overgrowth and they are simply sugars, according to some nutritionist they think corn syrup is very bad form of sugar for  example a quote: "Approved by Dr. Becky Maes - Yes, high fructose corn syrup is bad for you—it is a sweet enzyme similar to sugar, but it carries potential for a toxic response, especially in the digestive system. High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is something you should avoid at the store, even in moderation".

All I can say myself is I'm quite aware if I've had too much simple sugars I attempt to consume complex sugar where I can, otherwise my output can look like a beer with a good (Foam) head on it!

If you can try some plant protein products, depends on your diet limitation as a lot are nut proteins, maybe Eric can point to some I'm in UK so products are different brands!

I don't know which are specifically available in the UK, but I've had these within the last year or two:

Webber Naturals Vegan Protein Powder, 4-Plant Blend, Vanilla Cream Flavour, 26 Servings, 23 g of Protein, 806 g

BE HERBAL Vegan Protein + Greens Powder 800g - Chocolate Flavored - 20 grams Plant Based Protein Powder with Superfood Greens - Gluten Free, Vegan, Non GMO (Chocolate, 20 Servings)

Freshfield Vegan All In One Nutritional Shake - Plant Based Protein, 6 servings of Fruits and Vegetables per scoop, 20g of protein, Adaptogenic Mushrooms, Probiotics, Soy Free, Dairy Free, Non-Gmo | 20 Servings (chocolate)

Vega Sport Protein, Peanut Butter (19 Servings, 814g) - Plant Based Vegan Protein Powder, BCAAs, Amino Acid, Tart Cherry, Non Whey, Gluten Free, Non GMO

VORST Plant Protein with Multivitamins 900g | 45 Servings Vanilla Flavored Vegan Protein Powder Lactose-Free & Dairy Free | Pea Protein Isolate | 1 Jar

The ingredients should be a lot better in these than what you'd find in Ensure or inexpensive protein powders, but they are quite a bit more expensive.

Flavor... is always subjective. LOL

Hello,

Since many of us have concerns about protein and protein supplements, how many grams of protein per day do you consume? I have heard so many different recommendations that make it difficult to set a goal. I find that even without a supplement my total intake reached over 60 grams a day. Would be interested in what fellow ostomates consume.

I second the recommendation from chrisandbagpus about using plant sources.  I am using a hemp one right now. I don’t know how much protein you are seeking but I recommend Orgain. The powdered form is dairy-free.  However, they do have ready-made products that do have dairy in them. I find them quite tasty and yes, expensive.

@fred hi Fred. I'm not a vegetarian and I don't keep track of protein amounts. Eggs are considered the best source of protein due to the bodies ability to absorb it. Even though I'm not vegan I prefer soy milk especially when used on breakfast cereal. It's cheap, tasty and low in fat. When considering protein understand that 9 essential amino acids are needed. You can get all nine in a vegetarian diet but animal protein like eggs and milk are complete as is. Hope this helps

Thank you all for your replies but my problem is too much protein in my diet.  The reason that I asked about protein intake is that a few dieticians that I consulted with told me that women should consume about 45 grams of protein a day up to about 60 grams for high protein diets. Just my regular consumption without any protein supplements is 70 to 90 grams. For example, 4ozs of chicken has 35 grams, 1 cup of Greek yogurt has 22 grams, eggs 6 grams.  Those alone add up to 43 grams those are a few of my regulars.  Add cereal, flax meal, peanut butter, fruits and veggies, etc. and the total reaches up to 90 grams almost double the recommended. Hence my interest in the amount other ostomates consume.
