I've had a lot of trouble lately with output escaping to between my barrier ring and skin and I'm not sure why.  I've had this beauty for a couple of years now, but this problem started a few weeks ago; I don't think I'm doing anything differently, though.  It doesn't matter if my output is solid or watery.  My bag can be completely empty.  Sometimes it happens on the 2nd or 3rd day, it happened 30 minutes after I put new gear on this morning.  I make sure that I press it firmly in place, cover it with my hand so it warms up a bit, all the usual stuff.  I've tried different brands of rings.  Nothing makes a difference and I can't figure out why it's happening!  Any suggestions?  Thanks

Have you checked your stoma size recently to see if it’s changed? Do you really need the ring? Sometimes less is more. Are you cutting the hole too small or too large? If I cut mine to small then my stool will get under my pouch barrier.  Have you started using anything new like new shampoos or soaps that could be loosening things. Do you have hand lotion on when emptying your pouch? Do you rinse the pouch? What is your routine when applying the pouch? Do you use barrier wipes? Do you have adhesive or barrier wipe build up? Maybe needs removed? Have you developed a parastomal hernia or have one?
it might be time to go see the stoma nurse.

Chelly has some really good advice. Also have you had any change in weight. When you remove the wafer where is the output escaping. Always a solution 👌

I've had this beauty for a couple of years now, but this problem started a few weeks ago; I don't think I'm doing anything differently, though.

That's a frustrating situation, especially when there aren't any obvious changes that could explain things.

Chelly and John asked some good questions.

I'd also like to ask a few:

  1. Does this problem happen only from products out of the same box? If so, do you have another box of product you could try, assuming they have a different lot #?
  2. Are there any non-ostomy changes that you can think of, including diet? Even something as benign as a different type of chair at home, or a new clothing, could cause appliance failures without even realizing it.

Just your friendly neighborhood ostomate.

It’s maddening when this happens and there doesn’t seem to be a reason. One thing I have mentioned before that works well for me is using a nail brush to GENTLY exfoliate around my stoma when I change my appliance. I know this won’t work for everyone, but it really helps my flange to stick better. That, and using a hair dryer to warm up the flange before I apply it. Just be careful not to overdo it with the hair dryer or your skin won’t thank you.

@tigerlily

might want to request sample from convatec moldable bearers..you can really create a tight seal and it expands after use to prevent leakage. See ERICS review of this product
