Head and shoulders?

I was reading on another site that some ostomates clean thier stoma area with head and shoulders shampoo. I think they do it to keep from getting yeast and such. One lady swore it helped with removing adhesive residue and so I tried it out today. I guess it did help a little for getting off residue but not fully. Anyone else ever hear of this? Using head and shoulders?

I know a lot of stoma nurses will suggest off label use of products for one purpose or another when caring for a stoma.

It's plausible that Head and Shoulders could offer some benefits, but I'd like to see some clinical evidence of it's safety and efficacy around the stoma before using it myself.

Just your friendly neighborhood ostomate.

I agree about the clinical safety. I guess I’m so desperate to get this excess off and wanted to know if others ever heard of this.
I know my nurse had me go domboro soaks before for irritation and once told me to get a foot fungus powder. I guess those would be off label as well.
feel free to remove the topic if you feel it’s for the well-being of other ostomates.

Hi Chelly, I am a regular user of Head&Shoulders shampoo as it’s the only product that cleared my itchy flaky scalp. No this ain’t an ad for 🧴😂 I have always been tempted to try around the stoma and having read yer post I have given it a go. Well it’s done a great job cleaning rinsed off easily and had no effect on the wafer sticking. I have a little red skin at the bottom of my stoma which comes and goes. I have always put it down to a heat rash. Be interesting to see the results. Like you say always be careful of products and don’t use in excess 👍

Good Morning,

Maybe because I take long hot showers (ok too long of showers) I don't have residue after my shower when I change the barrier.

I use all colopast brava products, the adhesive removal spray to take the barrier off and follow up with adhesive remover wipe before hopping into the hot shower.

I don't specifically wash the stoma or area around the stoma with my bath gel but I don't prevent any of the products from getting on the area when I rinse them off, this includes bath gel, shampoo and conditioner.

Good luck.

@john68 i can tell you a better way to get rid of that irritation that is tried and true for me. My Ostomy nurse told me to do domboro soaks when mine got irritated and it worked pretty fast. I always keep some domboro on hand since.

domboro is a powder that comes in a box with several packets of the powder inside. You can get it at the pharmacy but call ahead to find one they had in stock. I get mine at CVS.
what you do is take a packet and mix with water in a old bowl or cup according to direction on the box. Take a gauze, washcloth or paper towel and wet it with this domboro mixture. Put it around the stoma and just let it sit there for 15-30 minutes. It’s very soothing and it always clears me up in no time.

@cygo I never had residue before now. I was using an extended wear convatec and it got really bad. I’m using Coloplast now but still getting residue just not to the extent of the convatec. I have a whole other thread called sticky mess on that subject. I’m kind of thinking I may be transferring something to my bag from my hands when I’m emptying at my clients house. I can’t imagine an innocent Ostomy bag could be causing so much residue and heartache or others would be complaining as well. Anyhow the problem is much better since switching over to this Coloplast pouch and I also stopped using the adapt rings for now.

@john68 that’s great and my nurse told me I could do it until the irritation subsided. I’m a daily pouch changer and the most I ever had to use the domboro to clear up was 1 or two days of 15-30 minutes of a soak.

@john68 hi, I always washed the area with soap and water afterwards because I was not sure about the adhesion of the clean pouch with domboro residue.
I have fortunately not had to use it in a while sine going to a convex bag although I have it here in case.
the head and shoulders started irritating my skin on my hands and my sinus. I have horrible fragrance allergies.
still trying to get this adhesive build up off again. Still waiting on my resolve adhesive remover. It promises to get the hydrocollid off.
I hope the domboro works well for you as it does me.
