Hi,

A few weeks ago I had intense pain right under my stoma and bulging happening. I was able to push it back in and the pain went away. I reported it to my doctor, and went for an ultrasound. The result was no sign of a hernia. I *did* push it back in and there's no bulge now.

Does this make sense? Shouldn't there be some result of something seen in the ultrasound?

The person doing it said that they had trouble because the bag was in the way (which is kinda why I was there!).

Hi Tim. Wondering if he had any explanation what could have caused the bulge? What comes to mind is perhaps the stool was hard/large and difficult to pass? I have a parastomal hernia that the doctor examined during a colonoscopy but not a ultrasound.

That's my first thought, too.

@tim Has this only happened the one time? If it continues, see if you can get scoped the next time you see your doctor just in case.

Yes, just the one time. I have not had a scope with my ostomy yet. I've had it 3 years now and haven't had a reason for a scope as of yet.
My stoma nurse I can email and ask questions of said it sounded like a hernia. But only talked to him and my family doctor so far, and had the ultrasound done.

maybe a blockage from a food that we have to be careful with or something. Coke a cola seems to push things out for me but jusyslly the testing they do for me to see a hernia is a cat scan bit ultrasound. I’ve had 3 hernias and had it all fixed with mesh 3 years ago.

One other thing I’d like to say is that my Ostomy nurse told me that our ostomies themselves are a hernia so that we are more likely to develop parastomal hernias if not careful. I don’t  know but I feel a good support belt should be worn even if no hernia. At least if your doing any kind of housework, carrying groceries, physical work, mild lifting etc.,

even after hernia mesh surgery, us with ostomies have a poor long term result because the parastomal hernias tend to return.
