I'm a newbie ostomate.  Had my ileostomy done in February and was feeling pretty great but then crashed after 3 weeks and landed myself back the hospital cause of dehydration.  Im now taking immodium, oral rehydration fluids and increased water daily.  I'd like to start running and working out again but obviously now I'm worried any tips?.  Also with summer approaching any tips for dealing with the heat or any extra steps others take?

TIA

Dehydration can be brutal. Keeping on top of fluid intake is part of the challenge, but make sure you stay on top of your electrolytes (which it sounds like you are).

In the summer, I plan to also increase my intake of watery foods - fresh fruit, cucumbers, tomatoes, etc. I find that I tend to pee a lot more when I'm eating water rich foods than when I drink a lot.  That's what works for me.

Try experimenting with a few different brands of oral hydration solutions. You may find that some make you feel better than others.

I have an ostomy since last October and I make sure I get at least 3 liters of water apart from tea and coffee , I know I'm starting to get dehydrated if my voice starts to get husky and then I load up on the water and im ok again , its really important to get enough fluid in to prevent blockages as well .

I was drinking 2.5L a day before I landed myself in the hospital, guess it wasn't enough.  Now I'm doing 1000ml of water and 1000ml of oral rehydration.  Just not sure if I start working out should  I increase water or the rehydration fluids with the electrolytes?

Lindsay, were you outputting a lot? We have to make sure that our input is more than out output, which is why sometimes our doctors ask us to keep track of them (by measuring both).

If you are outputting too much, then you may still crash even with 2.5L of intake.

You said that you're taking Immodium, what about foods that slow down transit time? Starches in particular.

yes for the entire weekend I was emptying my bag very 40 minutes.  The first ER visit they assumed it was a gastrobug.  The second visit they admitted me and are assuming its the ileostomy trying to figure out how this all works and what its supposed to be doing.  everything is pretty regular now with the help of  the immodium and fluids.

my intake has always been more then my output.

I eat a banana at breakfast everyday and rice at dinner everynight. Ive also added more salt to my diet.

Oh boy! That would do it.

Keep up with the bananas, rice (and maybe potatoes). Slowing your movements will help fluid stay in your body and eventually, you will adjust as time goes by (which it sounds like it has been).

I was drinking like crazy at first, and now I don't have to - but, keep in mind that a lot of my dietary fluid intake comes in the form of whole foods.
